Re: Extra Large Dogs on Metro North?

What's "the metro"? I would guess she means "Subway", in NYC-speak. Unless she's assuming that "Metro North" is called that because "metro" is what we call rail transit in these parts, and thus "metro" is a generic NYC-area term for trains. OP is ap...

And I definitely agree with you on our road policy. (Some friends and I were just discussing the other day why Albany NY had lost so much population over the past 50 years (and Albany is far from unique in this regard). I argued and believe it is in a large part due to increase auto and highway use...

For that matter, how does the signalling on the one more or less high-speed rail corridor the US has (NEC) differ from what your average freight railroad has? IINM, the "average freight railroad" (top speed 79 mph for passenger trains) has CTC signals as its top level, and Class 4 track. ...

The Staples Mill station location makes it _really_ difficult for Richmond to be a rail destination. For one thing, there is no public transportation at the Staples Mill Road station. You pretty much have to have someone pick you up and drop you off, or take a cab and hope they don't take the sceni...

I certainly dont think amtrak management is dumb , and i'm sure such matters are discussed . Why arent they discussed more openly , in things such as priia reports ??? . Because AMTRAK management isn't dumb. Once you make anything public, every boob with a mouth and no brain (some of them in positi...

With all of the high speed rail projects popping up all over the US, it makes me wonder if there will be a new standard for signals. I wasn't aware there was an old standard. AFAIK, each railroad has its own way of signalling, and sometimes different divisions on the same railroad use different sig...

Amtrak is perhaps within its rights to strictly enforce a rule about not accepting checked luggage later than 1 hour before departure, but it's not the way to give people a good impression of Amtrak. And the excuse that they can't afford to have an additional employee to handle baggage makes them lo...

However, Amtrak should look at playing more of a role in building its own stations, if it doesn't already. There is a new station in Charlotte being built, and a reputable real estate developer is handling the project, which consists of an Amtrak station, a transit center and other developments. I ...

Let's not.

You have decide what AMTRAK is in the business of doing:

a. Providing medium- and long-range rail transportation (and connections), as a public service, or

b. Making as much money as possible.

You can't have both.

Going into real estate is option B.

I'm of course aware, having grown up in the region, of the New Haven's advertisements proclaiming "Center to Center All-Weather Service" and the Lackawanna's "Your trip is Weatherproof....". But referring to the linked video, that was a day of when it was "the railroad did ...

The discussion on the Lackawanna Cutoff thread got me thinking about the idea of extending NJT to Phillipsburg, and someone over there kindly pointed me to this thread. However, I notice that there's been no activity here for a while. Has there been in the meantime any sign of activity or interest o...

Uh, yea, except there are plans to extend the RVL to philipsburg, ... There's also the possibility of trains going past hackettstown to philipsburg. All this discussion of Teh Cutoff led me to use the Google Maps microscope on western NJ, and from what I can see, an extension from Hackettstown or H...

The Girond was conservative and sat on the right side of parliament. The version I heard was that it had to do with the seating in the English Parliament. The King seated those whose political views he liked -- the Tories? the ancestors of the Tories? -- to his right (as a sign of favor), and the o...

The polar icecap melted completely in 2012. The sea is as high as it will get. This sounds extremely fishy. There are two polar ice caps. I had not heard that either had entirely melted away (i.e., leaving open sea or bare land), and I think I would have -- it would have been quite visible from sat...
