Re: M-8 Cars

I was waiting at Tarrytown for the 7:47 to GCT, and an M-8 train pulled up to the platform on track 4. Chances are it was in Harmon Yard for something and ran it revenue to get it back to GCT where it will eventually go back to where it belongs. Except that the train came in from the South, not fro...

I spotted an M-8 train on the Hudson Line for the first time today. I was waiting at Tarrytown for the 7:47 to GCT, and an M-8 train pulled up to the platform on track 4. I'm guessing it was the 8:01 Irvington -> GCT train. I hadn't thought there were so many M-8's that they'd use them on other line...

Re: Metro North Issues Speed Restrictions

As a regular rider of MN (Hudson Line), one thing that I've noticed is that the cars seem to lurch around a lot. (There have been times when I've been worried that the train would lurch right off the rails, though of course I'm no expert on that.) I don't recall noticing that kind of lurching on Amt...

Hudson line schedule changes

I ride the Hudson Line, and I'm getting the distinct impression that the Aug. 19 schedule changes were pretty last-minute. For one thing, they still don't have any printed schedules out yet (I checked this morning at GCT), and they're usually pretty good about that. The NH and Harlem line schedules ...

FWIW, the Westchester County newspaper (Journal News) had an article today (Thurs, Aug. 1, 2013) about new safety policies. An excerpt (hopefully small enough to count as fair use): Metro-North’s plan to improve worker safety includes overhauling how track workers communicate with rail traffic contr...

Not even the all powerful MTA Metro-North Railroad can predict elevator malfunctions. However, if a planned outage is in effect .... My question wasn't about planned outages. My concern was about unplanned outages which MN may or may not even be aware of. Based on my experience, these are not rare ...

As someone with knee problems, I tend to use the elevators, and have noticed that they don't always work. (Before they renovated my station, "don't always" was more than half the time.) As far as I can tell, Metro-North doesn't know to fix them until someone complains. Now, I can use the s...

Re: Smoothest and roughest track in the US?

After a rocky ride on some Metro-North M-7s yesterday, combined with memories of a silk-smooth ride on Norfolk Southern rails in Virginia a while back: Which railroad has the smoothest track, and which railroad has the roughest track, in the US? I don't think the track is the only factor in a smoot...

In addition, the original poster posited that Amtrak would also use such equipment. As the OP in question, I actually hadn't thought about it either way. I mentioned the NEC mainly because AFAIK the NEC uses a different voltage and frequency from some of the other NJ transit lines (IIRC, the line t...

If an agency wanted to run from 60 Hz to third rail to 25 Hz, they could use multiple types in the same train and deal with the weight penalty of dragging unpowered cars. Why would you have unpowered cars? Doesn't the 11-25 KV 60Hz (or 25 Hz) get converted to "low" voltage (=several hundr...

As someone who has never worked for any railroad, I'm curious: what procedures does Metro-North use to insure that track workers don't get hit by trains?

-be capable of 125 mph AMTRAK requirement, I assume. -have at least one set of bathrooms per car Is this an AMTRAK requirement? Metro-North doesn't have this, just one bathroom per pair. it's a tall order, primarily because it would need both 25 Hz and DC capability in the same car without being ov...

It's technically possible. Things that can go fast accelrately slowly and things that can acclerate fast can't get up to high speeds. Going fast is important when the stations are tens of miles apart. Acclerating fast is important when the stations are a mile or two apart.. Interesting. I wonder wh...

As a result of discussions about running Metro-North EMUs into (NYC) Penn Station, I got to thinking: 1. How technically feasable would it be to build a single EMU design that could be used (without modification) on all the NYC-area electric lines? That is: * AMTRAK (NEC) * Metro-North -- New Haven,...

neal g et al . have you considered renting a car? No. And that's not the point. I haven't considered taking the bus, hitchhiking, bicycling or walking either. I notice you didn't not consider kayaking or canoeing. With the Connecticut River right there, they should have certainly been on your list ...
