Reading's Herndon line?

 by Highball116 ¦  Tue Dec 01, 2009 8:34 pm ¦  Forum: Reading Company ¦  Topic: Reading's Herndon line? ¦  Replies: 7 ¦  Views: 28401

I know there was a branch running from Shamokin to Trevorton and out to Dornsife, but while the system maps show the branch ending in Dornsife, the satellite photos seem to show the right-of-way extending all the way to the Pennsylvania Railroad north of Herndon. Can anyone tell me about this portio...

About a year ago I bought a small booklet called The Bridges of Sunbury , which was published by a jeweler in Sunbury, maybe in 1991. I can't put my hands on the booklet (I just now tore the room apart), but it definitely shows a grainy picture of the Reading bridge with one or two of the spans miss...

My tour guide, Nate McKenzie, confirmed that the B&S right of way terminated at the lumber camp, and while proposals were made to continue northward, nothing ever came of it. I'm not sure if any grading was completed, but certainly no track was laid. Here's another interesting tidbit. Nearby Jam...

2nd trick op, that's a great history. Thanks! I recently met with someone in Benton and retraced the Bloomsburg & Sullivan branch. I'm told that the B&S was promptly abandoned after Agnes in 1972. He said there was only a weekly train at that point, and it wasn't considered much of a loss. W...

Linear force in a collision is sort of theoretical if the power is shoving a consist. If a train shoving through a curve strikes an object, the force will be diverted to the outside of the curve, possibly buckling the train. It's also true that in an emergency application, the locomotives still push...

Here is the bottom line. People do not visit this site as much as they use to because they do not want to deal with you. Hear hear! Nip's useless tirades and flames are exactly why I stopped posting here. As a matter of fact, sometimes when I'm in a bad mood, all I need to do to feel better is come...

DL&W MU Coach specs

I've looked around at different rosters and registers, and the problem here is that I don't know the original number series for the cars. I'm sure you'll know them-- they're the late MU trailers with the end windows and low clerestories, and have been distributed to almost every scenic railroad ther...

Yo Nip, You're incorrect that you can't tell a horn by its sound. It can be difficult, but for a person who knows what a manifold sounds like with its different chords, it can be very easy to tell what the basic designation is. It's damn near impossible to pick out which bells might be on a five-chi...

Terry- There aren't any major names I can think of that are phasing out SD60s on a large scale. A unit is taken off the roster whenever it gets too old to be in service, and there certainly are some SDs out there that are a little too old not be replaced. Which types of SD60s are you referring to? T...

Yeah, that's what I heard awhile ago. Do they actually own it now, or is it still "in the planning stages?" Wonder if they'll ever move it?

4909 is still sitting in its original location exactly as it was, except that it's a little restored now. The restoration fell through because it isn't interchangable as is and I'm not sure what work the owner was looking to do on site. I think an offer was in the works with another owner, but I'm n...

Does anyone know if any historical societies locally will be pulling anything out of there before it all goes down? I've seen many photos of the interior, and there was a whole load of stuff left behind that could be worth saving...

Slowly but surely, there has been a lot of ballast brought in, a lot of crossings rebuilt, and a lot of tamping and brush cutting done. Only problem is that we can't do much in the way of big jobs once operations start. The main focus last year was cutting back the foliage so we could keep the paint...
