Re: Lackawanna Cutoff Passenger Service Restoration

I’m not even sure Andover would rate a station. Andover has limited (one-seat) Lakeland service and Lakeland even uses the former Cranberry Lake station on the Sussex Branch as a commuter stop and park-ride. Just about a hundred feet farther north of the station site. My cue to post a vintage photo...

In any case, you don't need to go back that far for a comparison. How long would it take a railroad today to get approvals to build the cutoff in the first place ... Which illustrates what a joke this has become -- the damned cutoff is already built. They just need to re-lay the tracks Conrail remo...

Walk from the MIC to the current Amtrak station? It's a good 4 miles away!

New Jersey Transit bought the cutoff from a private owner for $21 million in 2001. At the moment, plans call for the train to run 133 miles between Scranton and Hoboken, New Jersey, where another train would carry commuters into New York. Let's hope the reporter means PATH :P Who is going to commut...

It's a shame that the current Amtrak station and the Tri-Rail/Metrorail Transfer station are only a quarter-mile apart, but each acts like the other doesn't even exist. It's only a very easy walk of 2 blocks or so if you're willing to hop a fence and trespass a little. Otherwise it's a roundabout ha...

The Iris interlocking is located here: https://goo.gl/maps/e5uzFSHdHM9pifzn6 . Seaboard and then CSX owned property for years that would have enabled them to build the northeastern part of a wye with the FEC tracks. CSX conveyed the property to the state DOT in 1990. Local media reports various opinions from commuters. Some claim
they remembered pre 1990 Solari boards (I don’t remember those)
Are we talking the Solari flap-style boards? Those were only replaced in the mid-90s. I loved those.

Ah, yes, I see what I did -- where the LVRR and CNJ come right next to each other west of Bloomsbury, I picked up the LVRR line. Still, I see a connection from the CNJ main to the LVRR there. It's only 5 miles or so to P-burg from that point; couldn't that stretch be shared with Norfolk Southern? Th...

I finally found a map which shows it at http://www.hclibrary.us/graphics2/maps/glen_gardner_and_clarksville.tif" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. It seems the street layout around it has changed significantly since the map was published. Google maps satellite view just shows...

Where is/was the Glen Gardner station? I was trying to figure this same question out the other week. Just looking on Google Maps, I was sure it would have been/is located on Gardner Lane looping in from Main Street. But when I went to check on Historic Aerials, I noted that they labeled a relativel...

Nothing says "ride me" like a lav that hasn't been serviced in over 24 hours... When equipment is immediately turned, lavs don't get dumped. Multiply that times multiple turn & burn's during the day, and you eventually have full tanks... and that's going to require a trip to the yard....

Where have they pulled up tracks on the CNJ main? I took a fly by from Highbridge to P-burg via Google Maps satellite view, and all the crossings and bridges seem intact. Of course, there's probably natural deterioration, etc. As far as the Cutoff goes, even if they only make it to Andover, I don't ...

Are we still at just over five miles? At this rate, the 25 miles from Port Morris to Stroudsburg will be completed/restored by 2065. I'm beginning to wonder if it might not have been a better idea/easier to extend Raritan Valley Line service on the old CNJ mainline from High Bridge to Phillipsburg.

Van Drew warned ridership may be low when the line first reopens, because people have gotten used to using other means of transportation.
I don't know anyone who ever gets used to the bus.

Re-adding natively the postcard pics of the LVRR station, which had disappeared from the third-party hosting site. I went by the CNJ station last year -- still sitting empty after the last club/bar tenant departed 12 years ago. LVRR Allentown 01.jpg LVRR Allentown 02.jpg LVRR Allentown 03.jpg
