Re: A question about HO scale turnouts & more

Have you thought about going around the wall instead of building an island layout in the middle of the room? A narrow shelf railroad is actually a great way to go for a few reasons. First, it's easier to access everything than if you're reaching over the middle of a big 6x8 table. Second, you can ha...

IIRC, the 22" curves are shorter than the 18" curves, so you'll probably need 4 to make a quarter circle. Might I throw out the idea of flex track? First, even 22" curves are mighty sharp, and some #4s are no better. If you want to run longer equipment, you're probably better off usin...

...can't trump the federal regulators. So it'll be interesting to see what happens if anyone tries to spend the funds on trail conversion. First, it should be within reach to get a court injunction to stop any rail removal by the county IFF the county tries to bypass the abandonment process. Second,...

One has to wonder if we would have seen more development along the Dummy's corridor if it had stuck around. Not that the far south suburbs wouldn't have grown, but it might have made the lakefront more attractive.

If you look on flickr.com, there's some guys who railfanned the Gruber line back in the day, and you can probably contact them to get more info. I found a few dozen 70s-era pics along this line.

Nothing listed in the spec sheet about alternators...curious. Regardless of what railroaders like or don't progress will happen. I believe that the alternator will also be supplied from CAT and be part of the integrated generator set. Cat doesn't make alternators. That's why it matters who supplies...

I'm also seeing a continuing theme of Caterpillar trying to erase the EMD brand identity, and now the EMD prime movers. Notice that this thing will be Cat powered. I guess they haven't gotten the message that railroaders don't like Caterpillar. I'd like to think that Winton, F-M, Cooper-Bessemer, et...

Otto, we should smack you for not following your own advice involving search engines...but you get a pass because I like the Valpo Dummy. Most of the good photos I've ever found are in this pool: http://www.flickr.com/groups/932473@N23/pool/ You'll find some interesting commentary in the photos as y...

So, um, who originally rained on the county chairman's parade? I'm sure it's not an accident or a coincidence that he hates the railroad. Well...hate is a mighty strong word but when people take the effort to spread misinformation to their senators, that carries a certain level of commitment not fou...

Turns out the vendor for the wheels in the Comet trucks discontinued the wheelsets IHP used....SO, he has a stack of truck frames sized for a certain axle diameter that he can't get anymore. I just ordered 5 pair of truck frames from him, figuring I can make something work out for the axles, but unt...

Run away from the train and head into the tunnel, because you know it can stop short of the end of the platform, and possibly faster once the motorman sees that you're down there. You might even have time to climb up the steps and get back onto the platform. If you can't get off the track in time, g...

Not that it was impossible to happen once or twice, but the 628's were never assigned to Huron as they were track mashers weighing in at a whopping 402k each. When the daily Green Bay turn out of Escanaba had local switching, a repowered Baldwin would get tucked in behind the 2 628's just to down in...

The baggage-RPO and diner are the only ones I know about. I want to say that the road raised the ceilings on 2 of each, but Jim Scribbins' "400 Story" will have the correct tally. There's a picture of the diner interior, and the original ceiling and roof were left intact. The raised part i...
