Can anyone update the status of the project to build two new car barns above flood level? Did the Museum get any acceptable bids? If so,have they awarded a contract? When is construction likely to begin?
Thanks

As part of IRM's four-day 60th Anniversary Celebration this weekend, the Museum put South Shore 2-D+D-2 electric locomotive 803 in train service for the first time. On the MIlwaukee Road, these locomotives were known as "Little Joes". Bigger and heavier than a GG-1, it is an impressive sig...
I just got home from a wonderful weekend at IRM. Saturday the Museum staged an expanded version of the annual Trolley Pageant to celebrate IRM's 60th Anniversary, and Sunday was "North Shore Day" commemorating the 50th Anniversary of abandonment of the Chicago, North Shore, and Milwaukee i...
I am planning a trip to the IRM for early August and I will be going probably on a weekday. This will be my first time there and I was wondering which barns are open for viewing. Is it only the display barns or are Storage barns 10 and 11 also open? Also are the shops open or visible especially the...
Hi, I'm going to Chicago for a week in August and was planning to come here for the first time. As I don't drive, I plan to take a taxi from either Crystal Lake or Woodstock. How much is the taxi fare typically (not asking for an exact amount, just a ballpark figure)? Thanks for any help. There see...
I think the issue of displacing longer distance Amtrak riders depends on timing. If an airport-NYC passenger for some reason made an Amtrak reservation say 4 hours before the trip, and that was the last seat available on that segment, presumably a Washington -New York passenger would not be able to ...
The PRR doodlebugs certainly ran often with the engine compartment in the rear, but with the engineer in the "front" of the train. One explanation of why the engineeer was backing up from the engine compartment end is he didn't want to go the the trouble to change ends. I rode the Baltimor...
Sorry! Wrong link to the CTA fantrip details. Look here: http://www.irm.org/events/snowflakespecial.html
IRM is sponsoring a fantrip on the CTA Rapid Transit system this March 27. This year's trip will have an 8-car train made up of married-pairs of each of the four types of d.c. propulsion car still in service. Details are at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqIQrDBJgjM This is a great introduction to ...

Last weekend was the annual Member's weekend at IRM. One of the treats was the first operation at the Museum of Chicago "L" car 1797, an ACF product of 1907. It ran for the public with 1268, a trailer from the same ACF order. Both were beautifully restored over the past few years primarily...
Hi, Im new here and I was wondering if IRM has any plans on extending the Mainline from Union IL to Huntley IL? Ive been to IRM many times and I always wondered if they planed on one day have a rail connection between the two cites. Has the museum ever thought about this? It has always been IRM's l...

After making my earlier post I suddenly thought of the South Hills Tunnel in Pittsburgh, which I believe is dual mode, albeit with diesel buses rather than TTs, but if so has sufficient clearance to handle trackless vehicles. Does anybody know whether that tunnel was built wider than necessary for ...
Also I believe the picture was taken around 1936-1950. You can see a Texaco sign in the picture and the year they started using that design was 1936. The B&A ran until 1950. The picture was probably taken in 1947 or earlier. The trolley wire visible above and to the right was the loop for the #...
