Re: Explanation of Childhood Memory, Please

The December 1960 Official Guide shows that the Mexico City sleeper on the Missouri Pacific ran only between MexC and San Antonio by that time, requiring a change there into the New York sleeper, which ran in the Penn Texas from St. Louis on the PRR. The December 1964 Guide shows no through cars rem...

Re: Yuck, milepost CPs

Many thanks. That is what I was looking for. When are RR's going to give up on milepost based CP's? NS is going back and naming a bunch of old Conrail CP's that were numbers only. My complaint: Every line, for the most part, has milepost 25, 38, 75 etc........ Names are more unique and can often ca...

Re: Garfield/Plauderville schedule to HOB/SEC

If that is the reason then maybe another crossover is in order. This would DEF make an impact regarding passenger #'s in Garfield as a crossover could cost only how much??? I am afraid to ask but NJT needs to look at the WHOLE PIC!!! unless they have done so already. Plenty of room in Elmwood Park/...

According to FRA Accident Report HQ-08-2005, the point of impact was 155 feet east (timetable east) of the Chevy Chase Blvd. grade crossing, smack-dab on top of the east switch (in Track 2) of the first crossover east of the grade crossing (he drove east from the grade crossing and possibly got hung...

In addition, I would posit that the Glendale crash could have been much less damaging if the locomotives were pulling instead of pushing the trains, and if the grade crossing either didn't exist or had some sort of monitoring system/CCTV to alert the conductor ahead of time that the car was on the ...

The Mount Pleasant Cemetery stop on Harlem line.
Don't forget Breakneck Ridge (great name) on the Hudson Line; and isn't there another weekend-only stop on the Hudson Line with a platform that short?

Correct--all pricing on the NE Corridor is market based. Amtrak is trying to set fare levels so that all seats in a given fixed consist are sold. The last time I checked the fares in relation to distance were lower between PHL and WAS than between NYP and PHL, reflecting lower ridership south of PHL...

As to MP54s running at 80 mph, in 1960 I worked for the PRR in New York with a guy who commuted from Trenton every morning on No. 22 (the Manhattan Limited). When 22 was running late (a couple of times a week at that time) they would run a "makeup" of 3 MP54s (presumably E5 or E6) which wo...

I saw a report (I think on Trains newswire) that the investigators have now established that the westward home signal at TOPANGA (the west end of the siding at Chatsworth) has a defective red aspect in that the yellow and green are clearly visible whereas the red is very dim. The story points out th...

Los Angeles was mentioned in an earlier posting; Burbank (Bob Hope) Airport is adjacent to the Burbank Airport station of Metrolink and Amtrak. It's easy walking distance (if your luggage has wheels), and entirely within airport property until you reach the station (I think the vans circulating thro...

To the best of my knowledge and recollection: ARSENAL and ZOO, being brick, were never painted and remained in the natural brick. ARSENAL acquired some paint in later years, but not from the railroad. ZOO, being harder to get to, largely escaped graffiti. I wasn't in Philadelphia around the time of ...

Does anyone know when the last railroad offices moved out of Central Terminal? I seem to remember that PC was still there after 1971 and later moved their offices to ordinary office space in downtown Buffalo, but was PC or Amtrak the last one out of Central Terminal?

To the best of my recollection, the Riverside station (I think only a rudimentary platform and shelter) was at the end of double track at the first street crossing east of the Passaic River bridge, which was single track. Regarding SteveF45's questions, Saddle Brook never had a station to my knowled...

The December 1950 Official Guide shows South Shore mileage (no tenths) as 56 at Michigan City (presumably the downtown station, so add a mile for Shops), 75 at Hudson Lake, and 88 at Bendix Drive, making the distance 18 miles from MC to HL and 13 from HL to BDr--even adding a mile to the airport doe...
