Cute,Scranton via Bingo on the Southern tier,NJT, MN, and NS. The critters will hate Amtrak setting up shop at Hoboken, unless you bake in a reverse move to reach Bergen County Line or the old Erie main from the M&E Amtrak connection at MMC Aren’t they looking for the reverse? NYC-Scranton via t...

I could rebuild my old car to better-than-new condition too, but even if it has a better drivetrain etc it’s still an old car with all the limitations of an old car. If that’s your thing, great, but it’s hard to upgrade an antique into a daily driver.

-Erie Newark Branch and Main Line across the Passaic, both to Secaucus
-Staten Island to Cranford
-the Newark & New York Railroad from Newark Penn to Communipaw, then to Jersey City and Hoboken (yes I know it needs a couple big bridges)

Wow, never thought Jeff would be the guy spewing foam in this thread

No one is using the “FDR Platform”, especially not with an Acela.

We won’t get a Chesapeake & Potomac Commuter Railroad until there’s high/low-level boarding, 125 mph-capable equipment serving Virginia. Gotta admit, it would be nice to have a Spotsy-Baltimore or even Spotsy-Newark express commuter train though.

I’m pretty sure the given reasons for diesel-under-wire were for security - can’t have a catenary failure that way. The British Royal Train also has a diesel prime mover, if I remember correctly. Georgia 300 would be a solid bet, both because of its former use as a Presidential ride and as a tip-of-...

Moderator Note: renamed, now covering Philly to the DMV. Let’s discuss the racetrack and the shore line elsewhere.

Especially the Anacostia River bridge - that’s the only two-track choke point that can’t be easily expanded with bulldozers and ballast.

…Amtrak? There was never any project on the boards having Amtrak operate service into northeastern PA, just to reiterate. It was all supposed to be NJT under contract to whatever regional operating authority were to oversee such service. Also, none of these trains were to run into NY Penn, but Hobo...

If there's nobody on/off, both governments cleared, pre-quarantined and tested... it can be pulled off. Lots of logistics to go through. Got to thinking this wouldn't be a single day round trip. There would have to be multiple trips made with social distancing protocols and all. Your talking a lot ...

Presumably if Cali can stretch the proceedings beyond 1/20/21 at noon, USDOT will quite suddenly reverse its opinion on clawing back said money. Would be a huge win for CAHSR and the state.

I’ve seen a few comments about how slow the NJT Montclair-Boonton Line is, and how it would impact express Cutoff service. It isn’t slow enough to warrant a Newark bypass via the Erie Boonton Line, is it? Genuinely not interested in igniting a railfan dispute here, since I have a feeling this is a s...

Huh, I could have sworn the Superliners were in the 190,000 lb range, not 165,000, and the Amfleets around 130,000 lbs rather than 110,000. My opinion is that Amtrak should look into gallery car coaches (the Nippon Sharyo-Sumitomo gallery cars are a bare 125,000 lbs ) to go along with single-level s...

Thanks for your responses. I realize that Amtrak needs to generate hotel power along the way, unlike freight trains, but it always surprises me about the amount of power they use for such short and light trains. Part of that is hotel power, yes; part is due to the Genesis fleet of locomotives being...
