Re: What is business class?

Priority boarding is such a bad airline-practice to import to trains. Trains have multiple doors, and much more luggage space. No need to plump dwell times I do think priority boarding, at-seat dining, and a significant upgrade in amenities should be associate with all Amtrak Business Class travel. ...

I had thought the Avelia Liberty was "Tier III"? but doing a quick google, "Tier III" seems to mean that you need dedicated RoW to operate over 125 mph, but can comingle with all tiers below 125, which...does that mean that *everything* is getting kicked off the inner track pair ...

Is anyone hearing any chatter that the FRA won't allow new A2s to run faster than A1 speed until ALL A1s have been retired? Of course that also assumes that there's any track upgraded to >150 mph standards. If you've heard something about this and have a concrete source (like chapter and verse from...

They still have to use the third rail to gain access to the West Side Yard though since LIRR doesn't want overhead wires on it (but if I'm going to be honest, LIRR should start converting to 25 kV 60 Hz on most of their routes (ditto with MNCR on at least the Harlem line), but that would require ei...

. And while we're at it, send the Rocky-ish train out for bid. It has to pay market rate, it has to fit UP's schedule, etc... and perhaps carry a few subsidized coaches for essential transport. What is the public benefit of this? The same as the public benefit of most western long distance trains. ...

At the very least, converting Long Island through New Jersey to 60 hz from the present 25 hz voltage would greatly simplify NJT-MTA through running options. An M8 would be regionally universal in this scenario, presently unable to run over 25hz power

Re: Would nicer stations in better locations materially help Amtrak ridership?

hasn't Amtrak estimated in the past that a downtown vs peripheral station is worth a good 30-40 percent of ridership for their type of services? I can think of a few between hence and thence that might improve their location a bit - Vancouver of course is the ex CNoR station, which is at the very pe...

But notably, they do not run any sleeper, and passengers stay overnight in hotels in Kamloops There's the key, Mr. Dawe. Rocky Mountaineer is a Coach train - albeit "Luxocoach". Obviously, CP decided that their scenically superior route (agree; ridden 'em both) had a price tag; and a priv...

What outside party would ever touch it? Obviously there's some sort of market, because the Rocky Mountaineer exists and has existed for some time now producing enough of a return to justify new-build custom rolling stock. But notably, they do not run any sleeper, and passengers stay overnight in ho...

The parlour car wasn't business class, it was not a revenue car.

Presumably 125 could be achieved by some measure of re-gearing (slower acceleration unfortunately) and an aerodynamic shroud, as was necessary for the silverliner high speed test . Or, you could just take advantage of the newer FRA alternate compliance rules and use real-world tested 200 km/h EMU de...

The other problem is that it doesn't fit the tunnels into NYP, so there would be a need for two fleets of diesels. The SC-44s are far lighter, fit the tunnels, and have a top speed of 125 MPH. I'm also not sure they're that much more expensive if ordered in quantity. https://www.wabtec.com/uploads/...

I'm going to say NO. The reason I'm saying NO is the same reason the 6000 HP freight units from GE and EMD didn't catch on .... too many eggs in one basket. If one unit goes down you have either a very slow freight that will stall on the first significant grade or a dead train on the main. Looking ...

my understanding is that Coast Starlight "Business class" is a low level coach seat with a drink voucher. It's practically an anti-amenity
