Re: Dropped Stops

The reason for ONR dropping the Oriole stop on the Northlander route was not because of lack of passenger demand: it was because of the difficulty in handling passenger pick-up for the northbound journey when the train was cancelled and replaced by bus. The bus could not get direct access to Oriole ...

Just received this e-mail from VIA: (summary details only) The following changes will be in effect for the period of June 24-27, 2010. During the core G20 summit dates, due to extremely low advance ticket sales, VIA will be operating a weekend schedule. * All VIA trains between Toronto and Niagara F...

I can comment only on the Northlander, so here goes. (Apologies if any of my information is out of date, but someone will be along shortly to correct me if that is the case!). Electrical outlets: Several years ago (back in the 90s), ONR installed at-seat electrical outlets on 3 of the Hawker-Siddley...

Many of the hotels in the vicinity of Toronto Pearson Airport have long term parking at low- or no-cost to guests (obviously intended for departing airline passengers). From there a cab to Union Station would be much cheaper than trying to find parking anywhere near the station, just as chriskay sug...

...or, VIA could run some more (all?) trains from Montreal or Ottawa in revenue service through to Aldershot, then wye them at Bayview.

According to the IPM website, over 80,000 people attended the event (5 days). They also said that more than 500 people per day travelled to the match by train. So 15 cars would be "comfortable".

All right - I'll admit that I had no idea what the IPM 2009 SUBWAY ® Express is until I read some information on the Ontario Northland website. For the city dwellers among us, there will be a colossal shindig in Earlton, Ontario from September 22nd to 26th, called the International Plowing Match and...

Well, here goes with answers to some of your questions. Others who have more detailed knowledge will be able to correct me / fill in the gaps. I don't think this is going to be a regular for the Northlander - it's a test operation from a tourism-promoting organization called Transportation Options, ...

In northern Ontario, the Ontario Northland Polar Bear Express will set down and pick just about anywhere between Cochrane and Moosonee (don't be misled by the name "Express"!). Quote from http://www.ontarionorthland.ca/en/railpassenger/pbx/polarbearexpress.html "Canoes, ATVs and snowm...

As reported in local news media (9/04/2009) in North Bay, ON, there will be another Bike Train this year - between Toronto and North Bay. Here's a summary, since nothing has appeared on the Ontario Northland website yet. "Started by Justin Lafontaine, the Bike Train has been running for two sum...
