Since the 261 is due for a boiler tear down and inspection this September, maybe a good Dirty Job for that guy would be scraping rust off of the flues.

You can read the shorter story version of this trip, w/photo, that I wrote for the latest issue of Passenger Train Journal magazine, 2008:1, Issue # 234, page 42.

Some little notes: The three tunnels along the Elroy-Sparta route, in their day, had doors which were manually opened and closed in the winter. The roofs of those tunnels leaked and dripped on the track, and in the winter the doors were kept closed, when trains were not going through, in order to ma...

My little notes: Is there analysis somewhere as to what effect the slumbercoaches had on the ridership of the sleepers on those trains that used them in pre-Amtrak days? What's the S-Coach price then, in today's money? In those days, the RR's turned the slumbercoaches around within minutes, to maxim...

Questions about Train Set Assignments for Wolverine's

Here are My Questions: How many train sets total are required for the three trains, each way, for the "Wolverine" service? What are the turn around routines? (i.e., for example: The # 352 arriving into Pontiac, becomes the # _____? for the return trip, etc, etc, etc. Six answers required f...

As per the onboard crew of the VIA Canadian: They alway change crews at Winnipeg: The crew between Toronto and Winnipeg was all from Winnipeg, and the crew between Winnipeg and Vancouver was all from Vancouver. I don't know if that's always the case as to where the crew people are from. One veteran ...

Buffalo Central Terminal - Any Stories?

by Scoring Guy ¦  Sat Dec 08, 2007 5:50 pm ¦  Forum: Travel & Trip Reports ¦  Topic: Buffalo Central Terminal - Any Stories? ¦  Replies: 0 ¦  Views: 3246

I've riden the Lake Shore Limited in the past (east bound only), but because of the new, later, schedule, this was the first time I was able to view the abandoned Buffalo Central Terminal.

My jaw dropped.

I'm sure you members have some stories to tell about that massive place, , , ,

Reference Mr. Norman's sleeping car capacity calculations of the VIA Canadian. The on board services crew occupies the equivalent of the 1 to 3 sleeping cars, depending upon the size of the consist, and THEY don't sleep in the sections. My VIA Canadian trip three weeks ago had 3 (Manor) sleepers plu...

That's about one-third the cost of the Iraq war.
Should be doable.

Thanksgiving Dinner, T-Day on the EB - DEEElicious!

I purposely booked the Empire Builder such that I would be on board, all day, Thanksgiving day, just to see what if was like, and because I figured it would be better than spending T-day alone (this was after taking Amtrak from La Crosse, WI to Toronto (via Chicago and DePew), and the VIA Canadian t...

Some more things on the Chippewa Valley Line: A Durand website claimed that passenger service on the line lasted thru 1957, although no scheduled rail passenger service was shown in the time tables after 1951 - it certainly could have been possible that the division hooked a coach on the back of a f...

Allow me to add further to this Milw. Rd discussion on the BNSF forum: To correct myself, the Milw. Rd line north of Menomonie (thru N. Menomonie) was abandoned in the 1920's , so whatever trackage is there south from Monomonie Jct (of the C&NW, now UP line) is of C&NW origin. Once the flood...

Allow me to have a go at these points: The line that PZ1 crossed is most likely the former Milwaukee Road line from Wabasha, MN through Eau Claire, WI, to Chippewa Falls, WI which indeed followed the Chippewa River. In addition, at the town of Red Cedar, WI, (about half way to Eau Claire) there was ...

A few years back, I was dining with a couple from Wilmington, DE, on the southbound Coast Starlight. They informed me that they were on their first ever train trip, a round trip in which they would spend seven nights in a row (in sleeping car accommodations, on board Amtrak: NEC to New York Lake Sho...
