Re: Boiler explosions?

I actually spent the time to ready the full NTSB/FRA reports on the Gettysburg explosion, and another factor stuck out there. The engine in question was Canadian in origin, and they used corrugated crown sheets. According to the report, the idea was that the crown sheet failure would be progressive ...

Les, first let me congratulate you on your retirement. I still have 30 years, 2 months, 21 days till I can hang up my reverser. Second, let me apologize for reading to much into what you said originally. I got it in my head somehow that you were originally speculating that the Q2 should have been bu...

Re: Pennsy S2 Turbine Drivers (wheels)

With the concern of the rods being in the "non-productive" position of being in line with the axles, I think, ironically, that would in fact make the 180* position a more favorable one over quartering. In a quartered system, the turbine would cause axles 2 & 3 to turn, forcing axles on...

180 degrees would be easier because the weight of the opposing drive rods would already help balance the other side.

The only balancing needed at that point would be the same as when a shop mechanic balances the wheel for your car today.

Personally, I hope it DOES go through. To say nothing of being a railfan who loves to see reactivated trackage, I'm also a railroad employee who stands to benefit from this. Though I work for a class one, someone has to interchange to RJC to get trains to them. Thats more work for me and my brothers...

Get pictures now, it won't be long before the bridge comes down.

Hopes get raised, and in the long run, I don't see this happening. CSX is reported to be a "on flatcar or in gondola" company for moving a steam engine on their rails. To be under steam & pulling trains? Not a chance. Where would you run an engine if you can't run it ON the water level...

... I disagree however, that any arrangement of the side rods would be better for counter balancing than any other, as the wheel mounted counterweights correspond to the side rods and pins on their own side only... Actually, I have to disagree with this portion of your statement. In fact, the count...

For one thing, all the access roads, as well as all the property by MG tower are all private property. (I think the roads are restricted gamelands, while the space at MG is obviously railroad property) If you have the capability, your best bet for picture spots other than the visitor's center would ...

I bought my first G scale diesel from RLR. I always liked that shop. It was a full day trip for me out of Arcade... straight up 98 to Batavia to RLR, then continued north on 98 up to Ridge Road for.. you guessed it, Ridge Road Station.

Good luck.

If you have a camper, there are several campgrounds near the mainline between Harrisburg & Altoona. See them all the time while in transit.

Noel, I'll have to double check the NS rule book, but I'm 90% certain that it says "when the short time ratings of the traction motors have been exceeded, the movement must be stopped, the reverser centered, and the throttle advanced to notch eight to provide increased airflow from the traction...

Jim, I sincerely apologize if my response came off being prickly, that certainly was not my intention. I am not sorry you asked the question, it was a good question. Ya, I have seen those units, but I thought they worked by reducing the power available at each step of the throttle by a certain percentage.
