Obviously the best way is to get your hands dirty, join an ongoing restoration effort. Or sign on as a volunteer with a working railroad with a steam program... EBT, Strasburg, etc. I'm sure there has to be volunteer groups with the wester roads as well. The other way, is harder, but to me, more ful...

My greatest scare was my first "training-solo"* run down #1 main off the mountain, which is far steeper than #2 or #3. I managed to get everything setup just right: just the right amount of air on the train to hold it steady, and just enough dynamic to control it just right... all of a sud...

When you ask about efficiency, do you mean 1st generation steam, as what we closed out the steam era with, 2nd generation steam which was basically the same, except taken to the pinnacle of thermal, mechanical and operational efficiency* or 3rd Generation steam, which basically would have been a mic...

Part of our ACT program is the qualification on the routes you need for your home terminal. Since HBG West was not normally part of the HCT routes, it wasn't covered under my Conductor Training. However I was looking to moving from Harrisburg to Altoona when I got married, and was forced to get qual...

Any such HSR plan as you have mentioned benefits only those within the corridor routes selected, yet it will take tax money from all across the continent for those corridors to be developed. Why should the farmers of central Iowa have to suffer yet another tax increase just so the NY-DC route can be...

And here is why HSR won't happen.

Whats the point of building HSR if it isn't going to be useful?

Even if you're just talking about North America I'm sure there are many who want to debate your 500mph minimum. And there are quite a few far less than 500mph lines throughout the world which many consider to be successful. Many are successful, yes, but how many intend to contend on a scale of a na...

Some are also located down by the drivers, others midway along the top or side of the boiler. The turbo-generator was usually located based on the characteristics of the engine... where it was out of the way, where it could easily receive supply steam and exhaust without effecting visibility, where ...

The reason for a lack of a REAL plan for high-speed rail in the US, is because no one wants to take the time and see what it really entails. The truth is, except for a few key corridor routes, HSR must move at a minimum of 500mph. Its simple physics & logistics. An aircraft moves at roughly 750m...

If its 14, it has to be vintage... 14 hasn't run since... 88?

Or are we talking about a "cold" move of the engine?

Is this of the same White Dear fame as that now land-locked station with the seemingly abandoned equipment?

There are only four "corridors" within NS perview, that I've heard or read about... the joint venture with the KCS: the Meridian Speedway; the Heartland Corridor, which NS just finished doing a serious boatload of tunnel modifications & other clearance work from Tidewater out to Chicag...

Part of the speed is also trying to have ACTs to get into the rotation for the training center in McDonough. The "corridor" the guy spoke of was likely the Cresent Corridor which is NS's trade name for a route paralleling I-81 from Jersey down south. I don't know why he would have said tow...
