But how does the Defense Production Act help with a sudden evacuation? You’d be better off commandeering existing equipment, like passenger and freight planes, ferries and other coastal ships, and commuter railroad equipment from around the country. You could make an argument for restoring & imp...

I think it was a orphan system , they tried to reinvent the wheel, instead of going with a tried and true system like the NEC ones. Same with the Michigan system, one could be forgiven for wondering if they were trying to spend as much money as possible. Less an orphan, more a system that didn’t wi...

Moderator Note: split from the Illinois Amtrak thread

This isn't Biden specific, but... What about using the Defense Production Act for infrastructure (rail) projects? If any of the rail lines go down... in pre-pandemic times, that would require emergency spending. I suppose you could, for equipment & materials anyway. It would let the government ...

The CNJ Terminal (Communipaw) won’t see rail service again.

In the event of disaster or destruction of some number of the NY-NJ tunnels or bridges, CNJ would be best used as an exclusive bus to ferry transfer station.

An alternative to moving block system, would be to simply have more, shorter blocks. especially in slow speed areas. I’m not sure the block length for the ex-Alton Railroad, but that is common for higher-speed American roads. They have a special signal aspect (often a flashing green or white) above...

AMT125 morphed into the F-125 for SCAX, the Cat takeover/GM sell off was still in the foggy future back in the '70's Huh? If anything the F125 is a descendant of the DE30AC (itself a descendant of the F59PH and F40PH) crossed with the PR43C and possibly taking some lessons from the Stadler EuroLigh...

Believe Metrolink(SCAX) has a few running in their fleet with mixed results Different machine. The F125 has a high-horsepower higher-RPM Caterpillar prime mover and was built in the 2010s; the AMT125 concept of the 1970s was designed to use a medium-speed EMD 645. To Mr. Norman’s point, I’m honestl...

While there were plans for overhead development at Widett Circle/Southampton Street as part of the Boston Olympic bid, I haven't heard anything about such a project since (and I live in Massachusetts and work in construction, so such a project would probably have caught my attention, but I can't sw...

Amtrak survived the Trump era without any calls to "privatize it". Joe certainly has a record of "Amtrak friendly", and as noted at the related topic, there is always hope that his down chain appointments to the FRA and within, the RPD will prove "friendlies". To be fa...

Agreed on Gateway. I also think B&P is a firm yes - it’s a good way to tout bipartisanship with Gov. Hogan (R-MD). Hopefully he will put the pedal to the metal on CREATE too finally. Joe has three tasks during his upcoming term: Leave the country in better shape than he found it Fight like hell ...

I don’t think it’s the population difference between France and Ohio, Chris, I think it’s the relative wealth and the extant car culture. If Ohio were its own country, it would have more coal + hydro + wind + natural gas reserves and less petroleum than places like Texas or the Dakotas, and might th...

I know the election hasn't been fully decided yet - the electoral college hasn't voted, though it's very hard to imagine him not earning at least 270 votes even with extremely unfavorable court decisions. That said, the Biden-Harris administration has started rolling out their transition plans and p...

Finally, and echoing Mr. Stephens immediate regarding development of Amtrak owned air rights , I think Amtrak has been quite aggressive in that area. Look at 30th Street Phila. Look at Boston South Station (honestly not sure if they own that. Look at Chicago Union Station. and even Queens atop SSY ...
