Re: Green Line Expansion Beyond Lechmere

To be clear, that's a day or less of having to take the Lowell Line out of service, as opposed to the entire week or so it would take to drag the track over. What I don't know is if the track is going to be pulled up, or left in place to become the inbound Green Line track when they're done.

OK, so they're building a track for real along there, to shift the CR to that side of the corridor and make room for bridge abutment and retaining wall work along the other side. MassDOT sent out a notice that the new ties are going to reek of creosote before they get covered with ballast. Do we wan...

This really looked like CWR. And the freight track was definitely stick rail, at least the bit near the Lowell St bridge I watched them taking out.

Also, the other day I noticed it looked like new rail had been delivered along the corridor, at least in the vicinity of the Central St bridge. It might have been the rail left over from the old freight track (it was two rails next to each other, next to the inbound commuter rail track), but I had t...

You miiiiiight be able to squeeze 4 tracks in there. But Riverside to downtown is already the better part of an hour; go much beyond that and you're into the steep part of the diminishing-returns curve.

Good questions all, and I hardly blame you for not reviewing this entire decade-old thread. :-) 1) Service to Union Square was one of the major priorities of the project, as it's one of the biggest commercial centers in Somerville and has no transit access other than buses. One of the early proposal...

Well, the big (T) sign out front is a hint, as is "To Trains". Every city's transit system looks different, and when you visit a new city it's one of the first things to figure out.

The downtown stations don't actually distinguish "inbound" and "outbound"; the signs simply show the terminal station(s), e.g. "Red Line to Alewife" or "Orange Line to Forest Hills". I have a vague recollection that the "outbound" side of the Green L...

Someone in Arlington looked at the T map, realized the other end of the Red Line went to places where black people live and it was all over right there.

Eh, it's perfectly reasonable to keep one track and convert the other. If the Northern Strand Trail is extended across the Mystic River as planned, the Mystic to Charles Connector will be a crucial link in what could be a *huge* connected network of multi-use paths.

I don't see that it's a problem at all. The BC platform is nowhere near sharply curved enough for the drawbar to interfere with the door (if it does at all), so the only potential issue is if the train derails in a really tight curve. In that case you don't open the front door. Honestly, I don't kno...

Presumably, they're not likely to open the front door in a tight right turn except in an emergency situation.

The northsouthraillink.com site describes a number of comparable projects , nearly all of them more complicated than the NSRL and significantly less expensive than this estimate. It's important to note that this isn't just about running Amtrak trains through; it will massively improve regional conne...
