EL Trainmasters

Not all were bought for commuter service. DL&W 860 and 861 came without steam generators. All of them often showed up weekends on the through freights in New Jersey. When I saw three teamed up over the Cut Off it was one handsome power lashup. Then they painted them black and yellow.... Joseph i...

Looks like the "juices" are flowing on the L&H message board at last. Our moderator must be so pleased. I can thank the D&H Yahoo board for alerting me to the Atlas announcement. I bought the Lionel L&H C-420 model (of #22) when it was I believe a JC Penney exlusive catalog ite...

Look at the Atlas HO Phase I C-420 due out May 2007, appropriately L&H 21 & 22!!

It's all in full color at the Atlas web site.

Guess I never knew "we" were the first with this locomotive model.

DLW Hampton to Washington

I was living in Oxford NJ in the last years of the Hampton Branch. I rode the train a few times and never encountered a situation where any crew member left the cab to walk the bridge. One time, about 1955, the Pburg Drill had some extra time and rather than run a few cars down to Pburg (that had co...

Alvin Smith/Still Around??

Just got into reading the Alvin Smith chapter in Lowenthal's LACKAWNNA IN NW NJ. Alvin and I made some trips together to the East Broad Top, Reading Rambles, and most notably the L&H Centennial Trip. Lost contact after my military service, and moving to Northern New England. He was the ultimate ...

L&NE Crummy

Any chance this hack was the one near the old turntable in Sanbornville NH when the WRR was operating?

I always appreciated seeing the LNE Pen Argyl maintenance stencil on it when I was in the area.

The eastward signal for the L&H marked 72.1 was right across from the front window of G Tower. Don't remember where the actual MP 72 was.

The L&H mileposts as I remember them (been in VT since 1966) were angular concrete, MB on one side for Maybrook and BD the other for Belvidere.

Railjourner - NS assigns the wayfreight number - "H" for Harrisburg Division - then a unique # to the home terminal for each job - CR used WPAL and WPDO before the buyout - "W" for wayfreight, "P" for Philadelphia - then the origin station code - AL=Allentown - DO=Dover...

L&NE RS-2

I'll volunteer that I never saw a L&NE RS-2 operate in New Jersey - I was there from when they dieselized until the end - all I ever saw was all kinds of combinations of the FA's and FB's on the Pen Argyl-Maybrook turn.

Just What Were

After reviewing the several excellent replies I wanted to add to the answers with a description of the "media". The 19 orders on L&H were a very thin (but tough!) tissue of yellow color and were bound in tablets. The dispatcher would tell you "copy 3", or "copy five"...

Often dream what the L&H would be like today - so please go on beyond what Mary has shared with us, and kindly show it!! THE bridge should have been fixed - a L&H Allentown to New England route is as needed today as it was 105 years ago!! I lay awake early AM here in Vermont recalling hearin...

Signals, train orders

The train order signals were connected to the ABS - when you moved the handle or turned the lever, the next block went to an approach. I believe the L&H was timetable/train order operation until the end (using open offices only) and with plenty of sidings and then less trains, even when MO was c...

Just after the merger, trains #71 and #66, the "P'burger , were replaced by symbol freights HP-1 and PH-2. These ran Hoboken to Phillipsburg daytime rather than evening, but did go east about #66 times. The mine at Oxford had closed so this job did all the local work with road power, GP-7's at ...
