Thank you to both of you for your kind remarks. Got to get this stuff down before my memory goes!! Next up will be second trick on a typical weekend day at AD. And, I've got to get down the details on that rediculous "wrong main" order for OA-1, OA-3 and the "Grab" at Mansfield S...

L&H Memories: 24 Hours @ Andover (Part 2)

After fighting heavy southbound commuter traffic on 206 eventually you got to turn left on the drive to the "station", over the connecting track, park, climb the stairs to track level, and in the winter dash into the front door, as the wind howled at this "outpost". And, on the w...

Thanks to all for reading my material. It's nice to know others can benefit from my L&H experiences. I don't have a train layout. The closest I come to one is the JCPenney L&H C-420 #22 in 0-gauge on section of track on top my dresser. I couple a different L&H connecting line car to it f...

L&H Memories: 24 Hours @ Andover (Part 1)

The little box of a station at Andover NEVER closed. Never any key for the door that I knew of. There WERE times when you wished you had a key for the door at night for a few scary situations. Anyway, it's going on eleven PM and bid the second shift guy farewell after a little update. The last two w...

L&H Memories: The TIN Man

(I covered this subject long ago. The earlier posting is not currently in this forum.) I'm not recreating "Alice in Wonderland". There WAS a "Tin Man" on the L&H!! It (He") was under a farm bridge crossing a little west of Great Meadows. You see, after a heavy eastbound ...

Thank you for reading my material, railjourner. God willing, I will continue. Just got back from the Tennessee Valley and will put together another posting soon. Upcoming will be a discussion of L&H traffic patterns, 24 hours at Andover!!, a look at 1963 symbol freight schedules, etc. Now back t...

L&H Memories: Andover goes "Modern"

Well, here's how that ONE and ONLY powered track switch got put into service. After stopping and throwing hand switches on both ends of the connecting track at Andover for decades it was decided the East switch (just across from Route 206, from the station) would be "automated". The DL&...

Well, you didn't have to look for signs, or even need directions. We're at Foley Square in the Financial District in lower Manhattan - and it's Spring 1958. Our favorite little L&H is shopping at the auctioning off of the O&W, and on a budget. The F-3's went off to a western road, the NYC go...

L&H Memories: S.E. (Stan) Pierce

The first time I ran into Stan was the Summer of 1957 after he'd come over from the O&W and was posting vacations on the L&H at Great Meadows. All of the stations were open then, Chester, Vernon, Franklin, and it kept him busy. His experience as a O&W dispatcher also gave him more vacanc...

Hi Marty Thank you for a possible solution. We have a computer "wizz" here at the town library and I'll have to challenge her to print it. It was only last year that I located that wonderful article in TRAINS by Wallace Abbey from the early 50's, and I got one from a MA dealer. I want to f...

Oh Yes!!

Heads did roll if OA-3 didn't pass L&H Jct by midnight (just across the Delaware). I understand it the L&H didn't pay much per diem other than online at customers. #33 seemed never a problem.

Long before Railroader of the Year Wick Moorman and his counterpart Michael Ward and their "metrics" buzzwords, the L&H had their own and it was simple. Mr Huyler said just get 300 loads into Maybrook everyday and we'll be OK. Having arrived at AD on the weekend after noon it was easy....

Good Morning Marty Thank you for posting that great article. I tried to print it but maybe the format won't allow it?? Could you try resending it in another format?? I have the New Haven schedule for the Yankee Jet from 1963 and I will reprint it with some memories soon. After several years lapse, r...
