Good points, pumpers, glennk419 and olneyrails. The PN&NY connected with the North Penn at Erie Ave. It was the line that (looking N) split off the NP just before the Erie Ave bridge, curved around the roundhouse over towards 2nd St. and then paralleled the west side of 2nd for about a half mile...
The Belt LIne used to connect with the Reading at their Wilow & Noble St. yards, north of the Benny, and continued up to Port Richmond. The Jack Frost Sugar Refinery used to occupy the site of the Sugar House Casino. There were also connections with the PRR, of course. The Shackamaxon Street fre...
I remember the open auto racks and the E44's. Can't recall ever seeing a GG1 in the 70s-that would've been interesting. I lived near Fitzwatertown and York Rds, just down the line from the twiningrdkid.
Oh, and the deer are back......you can see them many nights on the Prudential property....
CP pulled out of Phila. about 2 years ago, so it's down to CR and CSX......
I believe there are still 6 of these in existence. Three may still be on the NS roster.
Bill, I'd enjoy learning more about this branch and seeing some of the steam engines that were used there. I think the Branch was served from Erie Ave. until that yard closed in the 70's, and then the shifters came from Wayne Jct. Much of the Frankford Branch r-o-w is still visible from aerial photo...
Some other findings: The SD40-2's in the consist were equipped with an Auto-Start Feature that would've brought a unit online when the air pressure dropped too low. However, they were electrically isolated by the engineer, so the Auto Start wound up being disabled... There were Reset Safety Controls...
Also, the C30-7's had a Quick Release Brake valve which was designed to vent the air from the R#2 brake cylinder when applying the handbrakes. The second loco in the consist, MMA 5026) did not have a functional QRB, so the handbrake application did not have the required effect. ( Fm pge 25 of the TS...

Mike will be presentng at the Anthracite Railroads Historical Society's September meeting, Friday the 12th at 7:30 pm. The meeting will be at the Quakertown Station. The ex-LV trackage is used from Easton to Bethlehem, where it uses part of the ex-Reading RR Bethlehem Branch to cross the Lehigh River to the CNJ side. Allentown Yard is ex-CNJ, and the line to Harrisburg splits off near the old R Tower. This is all ex-RDG track to Rutherford Yard in Harrisburg. Th...
James, hopefully you'll see this reply--I just saw this post today. I haven't been back to the individual forums in a while. The Catty branch served the Crane Iron Works in Catty, and then crossed the CNJ, the River, the LV and made a *severe* right hand turn to interchange with the Reading's Catasa...
I hope the new bridge will also be an A-Frame. Does anyone know of any such bridges in existence? JM, A-frame technology has been obsolete for many, many years....that's probably one of the underlying causes of the failure- CR kept the bridge in service long beyond when it *probably* should have be...
I was reading this http://www.nj.com/gloucestercounty/index.ssf/2014/07/construction_begins_on_bridge_damaged_in_paulsboro_train_derailment.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; on NJ.com and wondered if construction is far enough along to allow for any decent pix? This was p...
