Re: A standard streetcar width?

If you're taking two or more steps up, it's a vintage streetcar. If you're taking less than two steps up, it's a tram. No. In North America trams are elevated and hanging from cables. NYC's Roosevelt Island "tram" and the Portland, OR "tram" are two examples. Streetcars, trolley...

What is the plan for how High Speed Rail will replace or overlay San Joaquin service? Can San Joaquin trains incrementally move to the HSR tracks as sections are completed and take advantage of higher speed limits? Siemens built Venture train sets can reach a maximum of 125 mph on the CHSR tracks. ...

That's the market 66/67 and the late Executive Sleeper (866/867) aim for. If only VIA could reintroduce sleepers on the Quebec-Toronto corridor, their equivalent of 66/67. Wasn't the '79 "Carter Cuts" about that, rationalizing low density LD service in favor of more key routes? Before sch...

The proposal is quite simple, standardize the platform clearance and fit anything narrower than the maximum practical streetcar width with sliding steps. I looked at the report a little more and it mentions a maximum permissible horizontal gap, this being similar on both sides of the Atlantic. But ...

VIA should have their entire Venture car trainsets by the end of 2025. They already have received 10 of 32 in Canada as of January 2024.
Amtrak is scheduled to get their ALC-42E Venture trainsets between 2025 and 2029 for NEC regional services.

Here's a list of streetcar operators in the USA and the vehicles they use today! SunLink in Tucson, AZ using United Streetcar 200s Metro Streetcar in Little Rock, AR using Birney replicas by Gomaco Trolley Company. San Francisco Cable Car streetcars in San Francisco, CA using cable cars manufactured...

So how is this scheme going to work on Amfleet, VLs, and Superliners? The next gen equipment get dark blue over the whole car. Amtrak is not going to do that with the present metal fluted cars. Do they really need to repaint Superliners, Viewliners, and Amfleet 2s? Amfleets 1s will soon be retired ...

Are the ratings you've cited the continuous ratings or the 1/5/10min peak ratings? I'm trying to find more detailed data on these locomotives to figure out the continuous ratings of the motors and/or their VFDs plus the HEP equipment, and it is surprisingly difficult! I got all that data, as I adde...

What do you mean "what platform"? All new passenger rail vehicles (including streetcars) need to dwell at platform stops or stations, right? Surely all low floor ones do use platform stops. Many older streetcar lines in the USA run in the middle of the streets nowhere close to the curve o...

They might not but could operators in Canada's continental provinces and territories as well as continental US states agree on a standard minimum platform clearance, regardless of vehicle width? This should be sufficient to allow quite a generous width. What platform? Not all streetcars use platfor...

Let''s make some sense of the math, once again.... SC-44 = 4400 horsepower from diesel = 3281 kilowatts -800 kilowatts HEP = 2481 kilowatts ALC-42 = 4200 horsepower from diesel = 3132 kilowatts -1000 kilowatts HEP = 2132 kilowatts ALC-42E = 4200 horsepower from diesel = 3132 kilowatts -1000 kilowatt...

I know about the Boeing LRV and I know it was extremely unreliable. But I am asking about a standard width , not a standard model . The idea is to specify a minimum clearance between level boarding platforms and the track centers, regardless of vehicle width. It seems most streetcars in the USA do ...

Love it! Much better and more colorful than the old gray livery.

Both the P42DC and ALC42 locomotives have the exact same horsepower rating and kW ratings in diesel mode. If a single P42DC locomotive and pull a train, so should an ALC42 locomotive, with maybe the very small difference of 200 kW increase in HEP power causing a 200 kW decrease in pulling/pushing po...
