Wilawanna Question - DL&W

 by Cactus Jack ¦  Wed Mar 16, 2016 10:42 am ¦  Forum: DL&W, Erie and Erie Lackawanna ¦  Topic: Wilawanna Question - DL&W ¦  Replies: 1 ¦  Views: 5093

Anyone have insight as to why the DL&W built down to Wilawanna (Pennsylvania) instead of coming off the Chemung River crossing and heading west more or less on the alignment of current I-86 / Route 17 ?

Two more bridges, but bridges didn't seem to phase the D&W too much.

I just bought the book "Here Comes the Trolley" by Robert G. Gurley 1964 - Traction Press 8th Printing 1969 Lots of photos of the Utica trolley system. Questions: Since the book is all B&W, can anyone tell me what color the trolley cars were painted in the 1920's and '30's ? Referring ...

Yes, I have a draft outline and about 3 chapters in rough draft. The rest is a bit fluid but I have about 1000 pages of notes and about 4000 pictures. I once thought that I could sit down and lock myself in a room and finish it off in 2 weeks. It will take much more than that as I now realize ! So, ...

Thanks again for the maps and info. Do you have a date on the Sanborn map as that shows the final termination of the Blue Line. Matter of fact I am working on a book on the DL&W Utica and Richfield Springs branches, and hopefully some day it will be a reality. It has become far more of a project...

Westshore, This has been helpful, many thanks. Trying to figure out the 1907 map, can you provide a link ? Is there higher resolution ? I am trying to figure if the Blue Line at this time (1907) was built out to its' final extent or not. Do you know of any sources of photos of the area of the DL&...

Ok, next question......

There must have been a crossing of the trolley and the Blue Line out by Whitesboro and Oriskany ?
How did that work ? Whitesboro was a bridge over Oriskany, was the trolley gone before the bridge was built ? Did the trolley cross over on the bridge ?

Ahhh, that is why I am twisted about looking at the trolley map !
Ok, making more sense now.

Thanks for the map. What I am trying to figure out is a reference in a 1933 DL&W Employee Timetable related to low overhead clearances. It notes overhead trolley wires at Columbia and Whitesboro Streets. This would be where the railroad runs down Schuyler Street, crossing Columbia and Whitesboro...

Where did these lines go (end) to the west ?

Anyone have a map of trolley lines in the City of Utica ? And immediate surrounding area ?

Especially interested in whether there were trolley lines down both Whitesboro and Columbia Streets in West Utica.

If anyone out there has old DL&W ETT's, I am looking for the following information: About 1940 the Syracuse & Utica Division was absorbed by the Scranton Division. This change should show in an ETT and I am guessing 1940 but could be 1939 - 1942. Any help in this regard appreciated or if any...

A further bit of research dwelling on the "Oneida County" location which Constantia is actually into Oswego County ..... made me dig further finding the following: Bridge 396 near Constantia would be too small to be the location, BUT Bridge 375 is the likely location at MP 281.39 five mile...

I think the locomotive is NYO&W Class G #77, or at least closely resembles the Class G used extensively by O&W on passenger trains between Norwich and Oswego. I would have to dig deeper to ascertain by the lighting what train this might be based on the lighting and consist. I do not think it...
