Re: Suffolk Downs Spur

The valuation plan shows the track was shortened February 4, 1953 (it is unclear as to whether this date refers to date of work, or the date the plan was modified), and removed May 3, 1957. It also says the "Passenger Platform Track" was added May 1941. The drawing itself also shows a &quo...

I saw what looked like a CSX hyrail truck right before the bridge over the Wachusett about a week ago. It looked like a newer Silverado and it looked like it said CSX on the side. I've seen them a few times. Next time Ill make sure to take a picture. I never knew Pan Am used CSX power that often. D...

Why is the west end of the yard no longer available? Are they doing site prep? It doesn't sound like the turnpike straightening project has progressed much recently. The switch to the west end of the yard is being retired so that the construction of a shoo-fly can be conducted. The shoo-fly will op...

Can someone explain to me why the commuter rail was relocated to utilize the Orange Line underpass for the Medford Branch? I see no benefit over keeping the iron straight and on the surface. In the original design the Commuter Rail Single Track was to become one of three Orange Line tracks. The Ora...

Given the current track throws necessitated by the GLX extension to Union Square, any redesign to make a direct GJ connection to the FRML problematic. D Apparently, nobody here has seen the plans for the "new" Swift. The connection to the GJ will be a realigned track crossing the FML #2 o...

Answer from @MBTA_CR: Yes. Heat restrictions will be implemented for entire line until entire project is done. "The destressing aspect is complete in that stretch but other work still ongoing." Well, that isn't correct as we have already lifted the need for any CSX heat restrictions betwe...

I read up on this a few years ago when we started to get hit with the continuous 'heat delays' on the Framingham Worcester line. Here's what I've been able to piece together: CWR has a Rail Neutral Temperature ("RNT") - the temperature at which there are no thermally induced loads (compre...

The only MBTA territory that gets fouled is one sporadic customer between Forge Park and Franklin Jct., and the backup move at Franklin Jct. on/off the main. ...stuff snipped... But with a stated T preference to use the southernmost crossover whenever possible so they don't have to back into the Fr...

My favorite FP10 story has nothing really to do with the FP10's. When they were to be delivered the B&M sent a trainmaster to ride them back to Boston. He went to Logan, and asked for a "one way ticket to Paducah". Needless, to say the ticket clerk gave him a puzzled look.

There is no reason that PAS can't move 50 mph to make things more fluid either. Same applies to Portland Divions and Conn River or anywhere track is maintained to passenger standards. Actually, there is a reason. Signal spacing is based on the braking distances of freight trains. If you up the spee...

This may or may not help, but two general rules I learned about reading signals: 1. If it's not all red, it's not red at all. 2. Read the signal from the top down. If the top head is green it's clear; if it's yellow the signal will start with approach. If the top is red, and the middle is colored th...
