I thought the freight yard was just west of the station, in the area where this photo from your website shows (not east by the lumber yard). http://www.trainsarefun.com/lirr/Amityville/LIRR%20-%20EB%20MU%20Passing%20Amityville%20Team%20Track%20-%20Jan%201968.jpg" onclick="window.open(this....
Location is John St, Amityville looking north.
As you proceed south of Oceanside, there were 2 crossings over water shown on a 1960 and 1976 Hagstrom Atlas. One was Barnum's Island Channel, the other was Hog Island Channel (the two merged east and west of a small island). Looking at later maps, the southern crossing appears to have been filled, ...
The track cuts can be affected by temperature and weather. If it is too cold, they will delay the process. The Merrick-Bellmore / Massapequa Park track cuts were done over a Friday evening and Saturday timeline. While there were no revenue trains in a split configuration (like Wantagh / Seaford), du...
The LIRR ran diesel test trains through the elevated Merrick / Bellmore segment a few weeks before the elevated station opened (Merrick Life newspaper ran a photo of it in a JUN 75 edition). Wantagh / Seaford operated in a split configuration for a few days until trains completely transitioned to th...
Newkirk, not sure on location of the photo. Have you tried looking at the 1966 Aerials of Nassau County and try to match things up with the structures and candidate locations? Many stations had a picket fence style divider between the tracks, so those locations can be ruled out. I suspect both photo...
Newkirk, Your Seaford photo is from 1967/8. There is not much to go on at all in the other photo, my strongest hunches were Wantagh / Seaford or the Far Rockaway Branch. Seaford was more rustic than Wantagh back then (probably still is now), with not as much commercial development near the tracks. B...
The chicken wire strung on the posts between the tracks is a match from some of these locations (Wantagh, Seaford, Amityville, Stewart Manor, Nassau Blvd, Little Neck, Cedarhurst). Cedarhurst had double yellow lines painted on the low platform so that's out. Stewart Manor, Nassau Blvd and Little Nec...
NYANDW, I emailed you 4 photos of the 1986 US Open Special at the then South Hampton College Station, which you are welcome to post.
Are there plans to place the Ronkonkoma to Central Islip section in service anytime soon (Governor Cuomo declared the segment complete about a year ago), or will they wait until the entire project (Farmingdale to Ronkonkoma) is complete to implement service? As for signaling, do they plan to convert...
The photo looks more like circa 1960 than 1976.
The first time I noticed handicapped parking spaces being designated was the 1985-1986 timeframe (a few years before the 1990 ADA).
I always thought the plan was to begin operations when Phase 1 (RONK to CI) was complete, while work continued to progress on Phase 2 (CI to FARM). It was the RONK to CI section that was identified as the most critical bottle neck on the segment, therefore the first portion to be constructed.
When do they plan to begin operation of the Ronkonkoma to Central Islip section? Is it being held up until the entire Farmingdale to Ronkonkoma job is complete?
