Re: Utica Derailment 7/21: Union Station Damaged

You're right it is the door. I thought 1802 was facing inward and that was from the roof collapse but doesn't explain the boxcar. The __1602 boxcar is not the same one poking out the door so there are at least 2 inside the building. There were seven cars on the runaway which started at Scheidleman's...

Aftermath of previous runaway: Erie Lackawanna Freighthouse/Susquehanna enginehouse. I think it was 1989. 1802 had just been repainted

Not the first time NYS&W has had a runaway in Utica...back in the late 80s some box cars ran down Schuyler Street and slammed into the engine house...damaged one of the passenger cars and 1802

Hi Allen: I think we can safely assume that the Navy standardized in order to minimize impact to training, spare parts, tech pubs, etc. Every time a new piece of equipment is introduced there is a huge cost associated with the logistics support...unless there is a compelling reason they tend to stic...

The US Navy uses ALCOs for diesel generators...Here are pics of one on USS BATAAN (LHD 5) which was built in 1998. I used to ask the Chief Engineer to let me know when they were running them...had an exhaust pipe below the flight deck that would billow nice clouds of ALCO smoke. The last LHD built, ...

There are signals at 209 now. Not sure the traffic levels on Hurley Mountain Rd would qualify for signals but I don't know what the threshold is.

It's a 45 tonner, was the Stanley Tool switcher prior to going to RMNE. Much cheaper to move when cranes aren't required. Trucking a bigger locomotive ends up costing well into 5 figures. 42 will allow MOW work to the west and get further than 401 which is more than twice as heavy. Also provides a b...

Seems like by using the word segmented he means Phoenicia - Mount Tremper rail and the Kingston piece trail. Phoenicia or Mount Tremper would not be able to support parking/event tents/etc. for Thomas/Polar weekends. There would have to be remote parking, bussing, etc which would creat a logistics c...

A great book that describes Schenectady Railway among others is Trolleys down the Mohawk Valley. Some great pictures, copies of timetables, tickets, etc. Cool pic of Luna Park from the top of an inclined railway. Also a little section on the Eastern New York/Kaydeross line to Middle Grove. The 821 has a Kim hot start and also ran with anti freeze when S&NC purchased her so if that hasn't been drained and replaced with water they should be able to run her in the winter. But no MU is correct.
