Anywhere around Chicago or South Bend with NS or BNSF SD9's running? I think Elkhart only has SD-40 and RS11 slugs, and I don't know BNSF Chicago operations that well. I'm shocked to hear BN still runs so many. With an office on the ex-NYC/CR water level in South Bend, I'm used to only the most mode...

You know, I understand the feeling everybody here shares about once proud machines going under the scrapper's torch. It's a shame that the pride and joy of men and women of yesterday is the pots and pans of men and women today. However, another group I'm a member of - the Yahoo Lake Michigan Carferr...

The "F" rule exists to refer the crew which end the conductor intends to move/etc... It's obvious where the F end of a geep is, but try that with double ended or MU, like South Shore, where each MU has both F and B ends. (front and back)

Only ex-NYC, such as MNCRR uses covered 3rd rail in New York. LIRR uses exposed like chicago - that's why MNCRR and LIRR FL9's and cars aren't interchangeable. I always did think it was dumb for any type of 3rd rail in ground level suburban areas. It used to be 1/3 of the el was catenary (Skokie, Ev...

I just saw a GP60 w/ low short hood but it either had dual control or long-hood forward. This was at Hegewisch by the South Shore station.

Why did they make 'em with that crazy cab setup?

The cincinnati subway was built under the city, only to have the tightwads pull the plug when it came to rolling stock building time.

Somebody mentioned F59PHI's as monsters - were these junk? It seems like everybody but Metra and Amtrak bought them in the 1990's and then they disappeard.

You may have noticed the Henkels and McCoy wire train at the siding along the Skyway near the Harbison Walker spur - that's likely the new catenary.

You know, I understand the non-turbo Geeps run out of energy a lot quicker than turbo-geeps such as GP40, etc... So why do railroads needing speed, such as LIRR or south shore, order pokey engines? I don't know what LIRR is like, but if you've ever seen the South Shore, it's an amazing site seeing t...

Who owns the line that bisects the IU campus? I visited friends over the last four years at IU but never actually saw a train. I heard them, and the ROW looked in good shape too.

Hey somebody better save some M1's after they are all retired - along with the CSS Sumitomo cars they are the first examples of modern electric MU's ordered/funded by governments rather than private equity.

I seem to remember a silver top, red stripes, and blue bottom from a Trains issue about ten years or more ago. It was RR news photos. Right around the time Trains switched from the cover with the red box/white lettering to bold TRAINS across the top.

How come BNSF logos still appera on BNSF line trains? I'm guessing this reason is similar to the reason why those E9Au's were always BN painted. I was under the impression Metra owned all their equipment. The only reason I can guess is BNSF owns the cars and owned the E9's, but I'm surprised their b...

What year were metroliners removed from service on NEC? And also, I used to see Detroit trains with metro-cabs through the 90's. Now Detroit trains have two units, one on each end. Why use two units when the system is running low on money when one unit worked ten years ago (one with less power on si...
