Re: Bid/RFP for New Locomotives - Qty 13+5

Ah, the "I know someone who works for such and such and they said..." statement. So, I am to assume a hearsay quote from a MN rubber stamp totally verifies your argument and substantiates all public spending behavior. OK, fine, - I know a guy that works for SEPTA who told me "We had ...

SEPTA could have expanded its capacity with the SL-Vs, but with 40 brand new cars they barely increased the total number of seats since they gave into demands for 2+2 seating. The only thing that split levels have going for them is standing room unless you go 3+2 on both levels. I'd also like to kno...

I know someone who works in Metro North capitol planning and when I suggest that certain projects are wasteful he flat out tells me that "if you have the money, you spend the money because you CAN spend the money". I don't agree with that and if public entities that try to save money get t...

It's one thing to adjust capacity to meet demand but not providing a lounge car that is normally provided is a downgrade in service. Do the sleepers come with a corresponding downgrade in fare? If Amtrak needs to pull cars off for overhaul then Amtrak needs to pull cars off for overhaul. If they ar...

It's on the schedule for MWT XV. Thanks for the heads up. BTW, anyone wanting to meet up with me in NJ, I will be catching the 7:55 or 8:06 PATCO express train from Lindenwold. If you board at Woodcrest I will be in the railfan seat. Anyone who misses the 8:55 R5 train out of Market East can instead...

If "ifs" and "buts" were cherries and nuts we would all have a merry Christmas. Of course new locomotives are more reliable...but where do you draw the line? A new fleet ever 15 years? 10 years? 5 years? If the AEM's need an overhaul or a rebuild then rebuild them. NJT IS NOT A R...

In the "peak" seasons Amtrak's coaches have been almost filled near capacity. I don't do LD travel in the winter, but it sucks for anyone who has gotten used to be bit extra room in coach. I don't think gas prices have that much of an effect on Amtrak's ridership. Anyone that price conscio...

The SEPTA AEM-7's were some of the last manufactured in the late 1980's. Electric locomotives should have a service life of 30-40 years. I can excuse Amtrak because it doesn't know when its getting its next funding, but now it seems that everyone is looking at NJT as a role model and assuming it can...

No idea, but - and keep in mind that I'm just throwing this out there - consider a run to Media/Elwyn, since you're a signal fan. That's about the only RRD line that has much in the way of anything anymore. Well there's no time to change the route this year, but fun fact, the M-W-T has never been t...

Unrebuilt, but low millage. SEPTA is literally that little old lady that only drives her car two and from mass every day. Again SEPTA has more pressing needs than new electric locomotives. How about Wawa service?

MARC Penn Line Service was been screwed up for about a week now due to "emergency track repairs" south of Penn Station. Just heard the single tracking will continue through the 24th with delays up to 25 min. Anyone know what's going on?

The GG!s were retired due to frame cracks (and being 50 years old), not transformer oil. While frame cracks were the main deciding factor, the PCBs in the GG1's transformers were a significant problem that likely contributed to their retirement. At the time, the EPA was getting serious about PCBs. ...
