Re: Southern Tier - East of Binghamton

Maybe they should skip New York all together and unload the ships in Florida and send the trains north from there? Issues are money and market. Ship transport is much less $$$ than rail, so for lower value goods, it makes sense to keep things on until closest point to destination. Vastly more impor...

A question I’ve been musing in quarantine is what traffic BUOI/OIBU catered to when they operated in Conrails later years. Obviously OI played a different role in CRs network than it does in NS/CSX’s today, but I’d be curious to know what carload O/D flows were carried/where they go now (if they exi...

Been trying to weed through CSAO North Jersey ops over the past few days. Could someone clarify to me the respective roles of OI-16 and PR-32? The former seems to go OI-SA while working PR (daily), while the latter does PR-OI, but at an unknown frequency. Is this correct?

Thanks in advance!

Accompanying 51 St's normal complement of rusty gondolas, there now is a cut of pressurized hoppers w/ SHQX reporting marks. Anyone know what's up with them? Storage?

Thank you both for the replies -- it is much appreciated. Back when there existed more traffic up that way, what was it? Forest products stuff that disappeared with the general decline of the industry?

Pardon a noob question, but was wondering if anyone here could explain Pan Am's ops out of Nashua. I've gleaned that NA-1, the only (?) local still working from that yard, works up to Wilton to the M-B interchange and to Concord for NEGS, but can't seem to get a sense of how many customers are left ...

The ARC Summary Report suggested it was physically feasible, but that it would require disrupting and moving around a track of the Lexington Av subway and possibly underpinning nearby buildings (along with a compatible fleet, of course). Seems like it's really just a question of how much interagenc...

According to news accounts after the Williamsburg Bridge crash, when the second train passed the stop signal, the trip arm did cause the train to dump . However, the train failed to stop in the distance that it was designed to. In other words the brakes didn't work as well as they should have. An a...

Thanks for all the info guys. One other question: You mentioned control lines . Is that the distance between signals, or length of the blocks or something else? Control line is the length of track ahead of a given signal whose occupancy makes the signal red. For a better explanation, highly recomme...

Okay guys; I get most of what you're saying about what was done in the wake of the Union Square incident. But how does the Williamsburg Bridge figure into it? Didn't that incident happen on the upgrade onto the bridge? I wouldn't think excessive speed would be a concern on the upgrade. And as I rec...

This past weekend I rode the Museum Christmas train up to 145th St. and back. I was surprised to see that the express tracks from 59th St/Columbus Circle to 125th St. are protected by timed signals , which cleared as we approached at normal speed for an express train. My question is: why would this...

Indeed, high-speed switches could remove the need to stop the entire corridor to get a train across. It'd shorten it for sure, but much of the capacity loss would still remain. You still have to hold out all traffic, give the lineup, get the train across, reline, and then give the proceed. Even the...

Not really. You said correctly above. Grade separated terminals are almost mandatory at this point, particularly if you're planning to raise speeds. AS it is, you're at the fringes of 135mph territory and everything must come to a stop if a train needs to head east from County Yard. Granted, there ...

It's a nice-to-have if you're content with a railroad that doesn't have much operational resiliency and has serious capacity problems. Grade separated terminal facilities are an absolute must if you want to act like a halfway decent regional rail system -- am quite sad to see it dropped (though I'm ...
