Re: Southern Tier - West of Binghamton

At this time, it looks like there are 3 detours heading for the Tier. 1 westbound and 2 eastbounds. First westbound (I1E) **should** be in Binghamton before sunrise Sunday. The eastbounds aren't even close to Buffalo yet. Wait and see what actually happens with them. Will be a great day to be along...

Heads up for anyone watching the Tier this weekend. NS suffered a major derailment at CP Altoona earlier today. At this point the entire mainline (90+ trains daily) is shut down there and at least some traffic is being diverted up the NKP and down the Tier to Binghamton. I expect most traffic out of...

You are welcome. Should be interesting to see how all of this evolves over the next couple of months as the "new" owners have no experience running a commercial power plant.

Who's that plant belong to again? Still NYSEG? AES owns the Greenidge power plant. AES sold the station to GMMM Holdings Corp. earlier this year along with the Westover, Hickling, and Jennison plants. Original GMMM plan was to demo and scrap all four plants. After some investigation, GMMM decided t...

Looks like the switcher is still on site -- just outside the dumper on the lake side as shown http://www.placekeeper.com/New_York/Map ... 14599.html. No sign of the trackmobile, however. And no indication what shape the switcher is in.

Actually, I'm not sure what is still left on site as the previous owners may have removed any operational equipment. To the best of my knowledge, the switcher went OOS a couple of years before the station went cold and a trackmobile was brought in to replace it. When I get a chance I'll take a look ...

Scot; I think that the answer to your question lies in calculating/plotting the drawbar horsepower curve for each locomotive across a speed range. The drawbar HP curve is derived by multiplying drawbar pull (in pounds) by speed (in MPH) and then dividing the product by 375. I haven't had the time to...

Standby might not require much coal at all. But it's harder to bring it in, unload it, etc. when it's cold out. Will be interesting to see how that shakes out. You are absolutely correct on that. Right now there is no coal on site. The plan is to maintain the boilers in a configuration that would a...

The situation regarding Dundee Foods has gone eerily quiet in the last month -- not sure that the deal is still on. Regarding Greenridge Station in Dresden the plan was to re-light the boilers for warm stand-by sometime in October or November. As far as I know, that's still the plan. Unclear to me a...

As far as I know the cars are there for storage. Last week there were three on their siding and another three parked on the siding across the main. Could they ship grain to another storage facility? Yes, but the same numbered cars sit there for extended periods. And their operation doesn't seem to m...

Not really, as far as I can tell. I believe that Lakeview leases cars for temporary grain storage capacity beyond that of their silos so they will get a few more in this time of year for that purpose. Silgan receives a covered hopper of plastic pellets every so often. In terms of Birkett's, I've nev...

Will be on Keuka again this year, from Sept. 25 to Oct. 9. Has FGLK been running to Penn Yan since the flood? Is there any regularity in schedule? Last year, the ex-P&W unit was in Himrod. It would be nice to see some other power. Lee Carlson Yes, but quite intermittently -- maybe once every co...

Scot; Might your answer lie in the driver diameters and cyclinder lengths? Can't speak to the LV, but the Western Maryland's I-2 Decapods (not the Russians) had a higher TE rating than their Potomacs. I have been told that the smaller drivers coupled with a shorter stroke gave them more TE at the lo...

FWIW, the heavy salt season is underway. FGLK has made a Saturday PM run from Himrod to WG the last two weekends along with its "normal" M-W-F roundtrips.

Can't help you much on that one. By the time that I became involved in these sorts of things, domestic rail shipments of nuclear weapons, except for a particular class of Navy weapons, had been replaced by air transport.
