Re: Coal Train Derailment in Nashua

Gotta wonder if NS will continue to allow the "run-thru" of their power on these trains if Pan Am doesn't upgrade their tracks somewhat? Charlie Every railroad has derailments... When they derail on the UP at 60 mph the mess is a little bit bigger than a few coal hoppers off the iron... I...

They have been running track cars ahead of oil jobs or about one a day up the line scouting for broken rails. The problem is, a hi-rail truck doesn't have the weight to detect a soft spot... Same problem they had on the Andro Bridge I can imagine it has been hard this year and in any winter with a ...

I think the original poster is asking if it is illegal to stop on a crossing where the gates or lights are not activated and the law that was posted does not address that. However there is a law about blocking an intersection,I do not know if a rail crossing can be considered an intersection. This br...

MBTA extra train on Dec 5th had an engine facing north, followed by a single passenger car, followed by 2 engines facing south. Today (Tues Dec 11th) I saw the same train (didn't see engine numbers though) passing thru Oakdale at 11am. Same set-up (engine, car, 2 engines). Also heading north. This ...

Those rails are known as "guard rails" which are placed at locations where derailments would have drastic consequences. The most common location is on bridges as is shown in the photo you have provided a link to.They hopefully prevent a car whose wheels have derailed from totally leaving th...

This should help the nostalgia http://framingham.wordpress.com/ In the book "Images of America - Framingham" on page 16 there is a photograph of Saxonville station. I am told that this building still exists someplace in Saxonville as a house? The book also lists that when the Saxonville V...

For wood ties, it's closer to 3,000 ties per mile, not 2,000. Concrete ties run about 2600 per mile. Thank you, I have worked on several hundred miles of railroad construction projects and never seen wood tie spacing that results in 2000 ties per mile, it is always 3000 plus. From the Railway Tie A...

Typical railroad tie spacing for wood ties (21") yields approximately 3000 ties per mile. This would mean about every sixth tie would be replaced.I don't know how this affects FRA standards.

[quote="The EGE"]As promised, more pictures from August 23rd. The links are to the full-size versions on Wikimedia Commons. The platform is fully in place, and the majority of the passenger bridge abutments are as well. I'm not sure what the large black trusses are It looks like they are p...

OK this link should work this time, I have mapped a lot of the right of way from observing it while driving through the area, from topo maps and google maps. The unfortunate part of the satellite maps these days is they are done with full foliage on the trees which makes it harder.Years ago I know i...
