He'll still go to the REDI center for training and to get his safety certification. And he'll probably be taken on a tour of the car shop there in Atlanta towards the end.

When you say Mechanic do you mean in a car shop environment or as a Roadway Mechanic who would be assigned to follow a certain type of track gang, repairing and maintaining different track machinery?

Ya'll need to come on down here to the sunny south and work in Alabama. I was checking a defect detector one day when a piggyback came by and there was a spider hanging from a set of trucks that was so big it tripped the flaps on the dragger. :wink:

When I Googled it I got Missouri Dept. of Corrections. They must have a really small railroad that only runs in a circle. :wink:

Back around 02 or so I was following behind a track inspector, giving all my stuff a 'look see' while he did his thing, when a 4 point came down off an embankment and slammed into the passenger door of my truck. He derailed the truck to where the passenger side ended up against the rail on the drive...

Living on camp cars is a miserable existence, especially Seaboard MofW which were converted boxcars.CSX finally got smart and got everybody out.
