Thruway service from Asheville to Salisbury, NC is back on the table again. https://www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2019/02/19/asheville-amtrak-passenger-rail-connection-has-chance-again/2914216002/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; This service has been promised for a ...

Not being a subscriber to the WSJ, I can't read the article, but is this a scoop for them or is this information generally known? Service in the inland urban areas of SC and GA is currently extremely poor, given the population and growth. I would agree that if Amtrak wants to boost ridership outside...

@mtuandrew the main problems I have with your second suggestion is that route 7 doesn't go to Dulles; it actually seems to be a solid 5.66 miles away from the terminal at its closest point. It would also require entirely new construction of the entire line plus the abandonment of the brand new alig...

VRE has funded the Crystal City new station in their capital budget for 2020. Improvements at L'enfant are funded for 2019 and 2021.

They decided against expanding the old bridge for sound reasons IMO. The piers mostly date to 1904 or so. Also passenger rail having it's own dedicated two tracks over the Potomac is beneficial because things can be done (trackwork, electrification, etc) without having to interact with CSX. CSX is a...

The alternative is chosen: Keep the existing Long Bridge for freight traffic and build a new one for the dedicated use of passenger trains. The cost? 1.3 billion. A pedestrian crossing will be on a completely separate structure and be a completely independent project. For the life of me I can't figu...

The public meeting where they release the preferred alternative for the Long Bridge project is this Thursday, November 29th 2018. This could apply to CSX, Amtrak, or VRE so I'm posting it here. The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) invite the ...

This is not that big of a deal. At 25,000 jobs, Amazon would only be replacing basically 1:1 the jobs that have moved out of Crystal City due to defense industry realignment. Crystal City has some very outdated infrastructure and architecture and it is good to see a major new tenant coming in and ge...

That cribbing definitely looks like a stop-gap measure. Never meant to be permanent. I agree, it was probably not meant to be permanent, but as I mentioned before, somewhere along the line "temporary" became "tempermanent". Do you have any idea why a monstrosity such as this sho...

Rickety ? Any pictures ? Arlington posted the pictures. Rickety is exactly what I mean. It has some tem-permanent cribbing under the beams on the north (west) side, although in my observation it may be a few inches short of actually making contact with the beams. In this picture (linked also by Arl...

This thread has been quiet for a while, but a quick note that construction has begun for the Crabtree Creek Bridge replacement in Morrisville. I have not managed to find any documents detailing the design of this bridge. I have heard that, although It will initially contain just one track but it wil...

Gwinnett will vote on whether or not to join MARTA in March. No commuter rail extension is planned, but a short heavy rail extension is. Part of Cobb is likely to eventually vote on joining, too. What they would build is not clear yet, but while Heavy rail is unlikely, commuter rail is a distinct po...

I know that after mulling it over for several years, Virginia decided on a western bypass of Acca. This has been under construction since 2015 and is supposedly due for completion this spring. I'm not exactly sure what form this bypass is taking. Does it go all the way west around the shops too, or ...

Why are Acela trains as short as they are? Shinkansen trains can be 16 cars long. Though the revenue per seat might go down, the operating cost per should also decrease, and I think Amtrak would benefit from making the Acela available to more people.
