A fleet of 50-75 cars would be perfect to keep for the holiday surges and to lease to commuter agencies such as the LIRR during the summer season as needed. Keeping more would be of no benefit to them, except to get expanded service off the ground. They would be a great asset to helping more regiona...

Are they single tracking thru Farmingdale Sta. right now? Reason I'm asking is the signal at the east end of Hicksville Sta. for main-line trains shows "approach-medium" nowadays (where it used to always show "clear" ) indicating that the signal at Beth Interlocking may be at &q...

Main Track switches will have a "switch target" which will show whether the switch is normal or reverse. In Single Track 251 Manual Block Territory, you also have Distant Switch Indicators. These protect these switches and will display a Caution Indication if there is a facing point switch...

[quote="geico"]Extend the 409 to Farmingdale train to Ronkonkoma to take some pressure off the 355.

Add another train between 553 and 621 from Penn to Ronk.[/quote}

That's what they're doing starting Tuesday..

There is room to the west to expand the Forest Hills platforms to 12 cars, there's just no reason to. Both Forest Hills and Kew Gardens have very low ridership. Go ride any rush hour train stopping at Forest Hills and tell me how you like having less space than a sardine in a can because only four ...

That 1909 photo of Sunnyside Yard under construction is incredible. Just to think that the track layout through there has hardly changed in close to 110 years is simply amazing.

Sure looks like Oceanside, facing railroad west from the eastbound platform.

No, it is a similar signal system. The biggest reason it is not the same is that there would be conflicting signal aspects with current signals. MN equipment, and every other railroad, lack LIRR's ASC system on their equipment. So no, this isn't any step closer to "brand unity", other than...

One of the pairs is 9011-9014, no 9012 and 9013..

Believe it or not, they don't deliver the cars in numerical order.

They did not. The last test trains were in late September-early October, at which point they were sent back.

That's happened twice recently at Hewlett, cars turning on the tracks at a crossing. But this - did the "porch" get burnt at Nassau? Be a shame if it did, it was a nice job by B&B, and saved us from stringing up paperwork. Must have been fun for the signal guys and operator at the tow...

Lets get the facts straight: Tracks 5-17 have access to East River Tunnel Line 1-4 and access to the North River Tunnels Tracks 18-21 have access to East River Tunnels Line 3-4 only. Tracks 1-19 have access to the North River Tunnels. The East River Tunnels are to the EAST of Penn Station; the North...
