You are correct. Swing-nose frogs are not new in railroading. They are a long-standing feature of high-speed turnouts.

One thought, there was no East Side Access when the current diesel equipment was ordered. While it is true thst the tunnel existed, it was a tunnel to/from nowhere.

CSX uses single head signals between interlocking distant signals, which are themselves multi-head automatics. Interlockings usually have three heads, which provides for a slow or restricting signal. A couple of notes: In their last years of use, the South Farmingdale, Landia, Grumman, and Republic stations were serviced by one train each way daily, an eastbound in the morning and a westbound in the afternoon. These were reverse-commutes for factory workers (note: therefore no parking required)....

All of the cars look to be gray (including the train distant left), so into the 1950s.

Is that a blue stripe on the first car behind the power? If so, I would guess this is the Sunday afternoon eastbound Montauk shuttling locomotives for the evening westbounds. A few years later that train would have six Alco 420s.
