If it was superior and cost effective, you’d see it more often in mainline applications. My MTM said the crossing panels are great, but it would Be a cold day in hell to have it as a mainline for the tonnages and speeds we run. They did a test case a few years ago between north Platte and omaha and ...

I’ll put it this way - I operate over Sherman Hill. Our twin bore Hermosa tunnel is under 2500ft long, has maybe 50ft of earth on top, is a dry climate - and we have water draining from the roof year round. It took MOW over a month to try to improve drainage for the water that comes out of there to ...

It’s a vehicle / train tunnel and is designed for drainage and has other features that allows it.

Hoosac does not.

You do realize their products are essentially grade crossings, pits, inspections and the such? They are not geared towards miles of mainline. Nor do they permit drainage that is needed and that if you have a wheel down or with defect, you are ripping up a bunch on concrete - whereas you can swap out...

Contracts requires that it’s an internal promotion.

UP does not hire upper level crafts to be hired, younstart as a conductor or other craft and promote up - except management.

All throw this in.. In the DC days, the locomotives effort was more directly tied into the HP of the engine. With modern locomotives, it’s the overall electrical transmission system, computer control and other magic. An example that I use with the new fireman.. The SD9043 is a 4300hp engine. The SD7...

N2 might be for some ancient power, but modern power will increase RPM as needed. GE calls it “engine warming”. The AESS systems require certain parameters to be met before shutting down (temp, main res pressure, number of shutdowns in a 24 hr period, etc) depending on system manufacturer. They will...

The telephone style handsets are more expensive than the hand mics.

As far as I can tell only one company is producing them.

They (hand mics) are styled the same as public safety mics but are weighted a little more and have a little different wiring due to the aar wiring.

Depends on the agreement, but typically the designated operator is responsible for track maintience to whatever level is agreed upon, if any.

Before complete mechanization you had section foreman and section men that would be responsible and patrol by foot x amount of miles of track. Took pride in the work. In a former life I maintained contact with a foreman in the northeast. When he was first promoted he had 15 guys for x amount of trac...

So is making accusations and how things work these days (and this is coming from someone who worked MOW and now runs trains as well as being responsible for and familiar with FRA regulations).

It's not making sense.

There is no wiggle room. What kind of wiggle room do you think there is? Any time a track car goes across you get all sorts of slow orders. That's pretty normal. As stated before, a track inspector in a high rail can only find so much. Think what it's like taking a 26k 200+ car soda ash train across...

Almost forgot... Many railroads no longer provide initial derailment services. They contract out to RJ Corman, Hutcler and a few others and are usually on call 24/7. Its a very costly service, but its cheaper than pulling railroad men and keeping dedicated equipment in working order that is (general...
