Re: Alternative fuels for rail transport

It's that time again! I recently found an article which discussed using a new type of aluminum-air battery for rail transport. Anyone have any thoughts of what can be the most efficient energy source for running trains as we are constantly running out of fossil fuels? https://www.autoblog.com/2019/...

Railway Age, the magazine industry ostensibly read by executive and managers, has become a soapbox for enhanced passenger trains - nationwide. The linked material appears to be an opinion piece, even if it does not meet my personal standards for being labeled as such. But be that as it may, I'm at ...

Regarding the excess weight of an AC dual-mode: Why not 3 axle trucks? That would reduce the axle weight, reduce damage to the tracks, yet allow the whole wish list to be installed in one chassis. In theory. There must be a reason 3 axle trucks aren't considered, as Amtrak now uses zero such locomot...

"by Greg Moore » Mon Aug 26, 2019 2:00 pm" I wish there was a 'like' button. Having worked in telecom, I can state that there are many things, some obvious and some not, that an adversary or potential adversary can implant in such systems. It need not do anything dramatic; how about simply...

What train length limits at BOS? Couple of the high tracks are short, but they are generally not used by Amtrak. There is a capacity problem until they buy out the USPS "General Mail Facility" ...or build the North South Rail Link, which would reduce the demand on South Station by allowin...

What's missing is these posts is that the function of a bar car is not as an alcohol delivery device, it's to have a place to make and see friends. On a long CR route, people take the same train month after month, year after year. Having a beer at your seat, by yourself is sad. Doing so in the bar c...

Thomas Edison built a battery EMU, it ran on LIRR. He also custom-built nickel-iron batteries for it, a type very well suited to railroads. It an a pretty good distance, I believe.

I think they are smart enough to know the beating they are receiving and they are begging for mercy. This may be a groan-inducing question, but how can running on rails constitute a 'beating'? They are industrial equipment, designed to run at rated loads all day, every day until some service interv...

Just think how much faster passengers could get to destinations if every route listed could have just 110 MPH running except for station stops ? Most routes do not even average 50 MPH. You could get that 110 average by having just a few 125 sections. Get rid of all slow spots and passenger rail bec...

People will be people, and all of us misbehave most of the time. If you can’t stand the noisy environment of public transportation I recommend the following two remedies; (1) don’t ride public transit, and (2) wear ear plugs. Respectfully, I believe that is a flip and dismissive response to a real ...

They advocate for a position you disagree with. The word "evil" has a meaning, and it does not mean what you imply it means.

That MMA train was parked with the train brakes not applied , just a few cars had handbrakes set, plus the locomotive's independent brakes. It was parked at the top of a hill, on the main line, with not one wheel chock, etc. It was like a bear trap set and held open with a rusty piece of wire. OPTO ...
