Re: No. 14: What happened?

Sad to see the old girl this way. What's missing from the engineer's side cab interior is the wire milk crate Manley used to give pretty girls a ride on the way back from Curriers. He would dip into his bibs and pull out the Copenhagen can, open it up and offer a dip to the young lady. Only one trie...

Since I was the regular fireman that year, if you rode on a Saturday or Sunday, I was your fireman. In a view at the end of your video, it does look like me on the left side. Enjoyed the video. BTW, for the Bicentennial the next year, the smoke box grab was painted red, white and blue along with var...

The R/W/B scheme lasted into the next year. I'd have to check my photos to see if it made it all year, don't remember 30+ years ago to that detail. For a while, we had these HUGE flags, probably 2x3. We had to tie them to the handrails as they kept blocking our view ahead. Eventually went to smaller...

I fired 14 for Manley during the 75-77 seasons. If you were around then, especially in 1976, you heard a LOT of different whistles. 14 carried the five chime whistle as the regular one and the CN whistle mounted on the engineer's side. The CN was the quieter of the two. There is a 2" elbow pipe...

The video is on the GMA website: http://abcnews.go.com/gma

Just expand the "today" section and scroll down. A really nice job. Also, there is another video, an expanded version of the Niagara Falls interview, via a link underneath the video window.

I think it was the summer of 1976, a man and his son from Rochester spent a whole weekend and part of another filming the train with 14. They were everywhere! We did a lot of making smoke for them and using different whistles. They did send me a thank you for our cooperation but I never did get to s...

How many cars

When I worked the 1975-77 seasons, we used four coaches and the gon as a regular consist. When we needed more, we would go back to the wye and pick up two more cars. The two derelict coaches were sitting on the wye, also. It seemed like we added the addtional two cars on Sundays the most, usually th...

18 looks fantastic! Thanks for sharing the pix. I know Manley would have loved to see it.

Does anyone know the names of the gentlemen who were Superintendents in 1974-75 and 1976? I can't remember their names. I know Ruth Tanner was GM thru that period, Paul Hallett was Super in '77 and I think Dave Copeland followed him.

Time to repair

If 18 runs this year, be thankful it has only taken 7 years. In February 2000, I was one of the last engineers to run steam at the MidContinent Rwy Museum in North Freedom, WI. Our engines have been undergoing Form 4 repairs since then, with two full-time crew working in the shop plus thousands of v...

Just found the new site and joined the Forum. Many years since I was in Arcade but have many fond memories which I will share if anyone is interested. Hard to pick my best memory. My first was a Niagara Frontier Region, Natl Model RR Assn meeting and trip behind 18 in the mid-60s. This may have been...

Bicentennial paint scheme

That RWB paint scheme really did look nice with the American flags we flew with it. I think we only used that scheme for 1976 and it reverted to orange the next year. I'll have to check my slides. I was the regular fireman for 1975-77 and that Bicentennial July 4th, we had a heck of a time. I believ...

Two items on the Warwick. The car is now in Franklin, NY, the site of Walt Rich's museum. The car is being thoroughly restored and should be a beauty when done. Walter was an avid O&W fan. Now for the Honeymoon Car. I have done extensive research on this car and the legend and you can read my fi...
