Re: Amtrak Gateway Tunnels

Why would the tunnel be built in open water? Why wouldn't they just build it using a TBM? It's legitimate to say you can't obstruct the channel, by the way. The berths of the Passenger Ship Terminal are upriver of the tunnels, for one. More importantly, the river is navigable for ocean-going ships ...

I dont think the FRA will allow speeds over 79mph without cab signals. Remember PTC is a safety overlay. The FRA allows 80+ mph for systems with Automatic Cab Signals, Automatic Train Control, and Automatic Train Stop. If a Positive Train Control System includes an ATS or cab signal component, it s...

All of this said, I’d like to see Alstom propose a diesel-powered version of the Avelia Liberty for the Canada Corridor. The JetTrain wasn’t practical, but the idea of a North American version of the InterCity125 still has a lot of merit. That exists . Specially considering that it will soon be a S...

If they can stuff all that is controlled by Section B into CETC, K Tower should just be a piece of cake :)

I am curious about how one would go about fitting a regular Amtrak Coach seat in the upper gallery level of gallery cars and still leave room for people to walk by it to the next seat. Just curious mind you. I can;t figure it out. And if you can't do that then the additional capacity in a Gallery Ca...

Also, woe unto the engineer who has to tunnel through the fault lines between Bakersfield to Los Angeles (one of the few places it makes some sense in the USA.) Isn't that exactly one the two major tunneling projects involved in the California HSR project? The other one is under Pacheco Pass betwee...

Apparently it had to take one full generation of high speed train sets and countless millions to finally get FRA to accept that their safety standards were a bit voer the top and not suitable for high speed train sets. :)

One other possibility is Denver with the new Airport service. But only one train a day each way with relatively unreliable arrivals and departures does not make for a happy situation.

As for the actual height of the Chargers, from the videos, they appear to be slightly shorter than the P-42s which have a reported height of 14'4", So, I concure, the Chargers are around 14 feet tall, regardless of the Siemens published specification sheet. Simple unit conversion error, oversi...

I think if we want to see it on max speed of 125 mph is should be going to the NEC. So far i know is the NEC current the only line in north America where the speed is 125 mph or higher... The other place where Chargers will run at 125mph is between Cocoa and Orlando Airport on AAF's brand new track...

Didn't the P42 truck problems happen due to inappropriate maintenance practices instituted by Amtrak at some point? Once they stopped that the truck fatigue problems went away.

Do they have any plans (or long-term desire?) to convert the last 25 Hz portion of the NJCL to 60 Hz/25 kV when they've got their frequency-agile next-gen EMU's ordered. A little bit weird to have their own phase break to maintain on a branchline. The Arrow EMUs are frequency agile. Being capable o...

Besides, didn't the Paxman Valentas from the marine environment power the British 125mph HSTs for several decades before they were finally re-engined recently?

Who said anything about England? The term that was used was Britain, and normally Scotland is believed to be part of Britain, no?

Actually ECML has probably more sustained 125mph segments than does the NEC.

The All Aboard Florida/Brightline version of the Siemens Sprinter looks very different from the State sponsored Amtrak service ones. Take a look at this article on the announcement that came from All Aboard Florida today: http://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/destinations/2015/11/09/florida-express-t...
