Railroads powering business in Livingston County

It may seem like an antiquated method of transportation, but railroads are a key to attracting business in Livingston County. That's according to Joseph Boardman, the Federal Railroad Administrator who toured of the Livonia, Avon, and Lakeville railroad Friday.

The railroad is used to transport grain and sweeteners to companies like Perdue Farms in Lakeville and Kraft Foods in Avon. Because of the high cost of fuel, the railroads can give businesses a competitive advantage.

"In order to do that in times of high energy prices, they're looking to make greater use of railroads for the long haul, because railroads haul a ton of freight for a fourth of the fuel that a truck does on the highway," says Boardman.

Boardman adds that Barilla Pasta, whose Avon plant is expected to open in 2009, selected the site largely because of the railroad connection.

Cheers to Bill Burt et al for taking tracks that neither EL nor CR wanted, and polishing them into a gem! :-D
