Reports are coming in from all over that former NYSW 116 (NYO&W 116) is headed for the DURR at Arkville next week.

Otto,

Yes according to Doug Kadow, president of the UDRRHS, it is being loaded in Oneonta today with transport to Arkville (actually it will be unloaded at Kelly Corners) on Tuesday, 5/12, though this is subject to change. I will post more here as I find out more.

Update is that the unit is being loaded in Binghampton on Monday the 10th and will head to Arkville once it gets its NYSDOT inspection. Most likely it will make the move to Kelly's Corners Wednesday or Thursday. Apparently the rig cannot travel legally on Friday.

Will send more updates as I get them.

Below is the rig that is being used for the move:

What is the heritage of this engine?

"NYO&W" stands for New York, Ontario & Western. When NYO&W went bankrupt and shut down in 1957, it was purchased by the New York Central. It passed on to Penn Central in 1968, Conrail in 1976. It was purchased by the New York Susquehanna & Western and restored to its original NYO&W appearance in the mid-1980s.

I got permission to go beyond the platform at Armory Square to get this shot during the 2007 Balloon Festival. They were running the RDC's this weekend. Very cool little locomotive... lots of character. :-D

Definitely a "survivor" and definitely had a "guardian angel" in the form of NYSW owner Walter Rich, who was a huge O&W fan.

The locomotive shown on this tractor trailer in this photo doesn't look like N.Y.O.& W No.116,the color looks black to me.

Right you are, Tom! The locomotive in the picture is MPA 82. But Ernie posted the photo to show the kind of tractor trailer ("rig") that will be used for the move.

I'm asking about the trucking company not the loco in the photo here. I have seen NYO&W 116 in Syracuse a few times.

Most accounts I've read indicate it was purchased by a private owner upon retirement by Conrail, restored and leased/loaned to the NYS&W until this person died. It's unclear if it was willed to the NYS&W or Walter Rich or purchased by one of those parties at that point.

It does seem kind of a shame to landlock this engine at least for the foreseeable future, but at least it's going somewhere with a good track record of taking care of things.

Do any other O&W units remain beyond this and the 44-tonner that was in New Jersey the last I was aware?

Wouldn't it be a bigger shame to have it stuffed and mounted somewhere? Landlocked or not, at least it will be kept operating...
