Also what’s up with the doubleheader that was on Atlantic City Line today?

Bracdude- You got to think of it as you do your car. It may be old and overall runs well but it still will occasionally have problems like anything else that’s mechanical. Smoke is usually oil related.

All of these engines smoke, even the brand spanking new ones. That's what exhaust is, smoke. Sometimes it's heavier that others. Heavy smoke doesn't mean an engine's bad.

@railcar1 For what this engine was doing? It’s either not getting enough air or it has a compression problem. I’m leaning towards not getting enough air. I know about engines somewhat because of a vocational class I took.

@acemac if all engines smoke then why was the 5287 not smoking at all??

I saw CA51 returning to Camden last evening with 5283 and 6235 with about 25 cars or so.

Did you hear the noise 5283 was making and see all the black smoke coming out?

Talking about loud and smoky engines has run its course. It’s always been reality on the railroad.

Nothing beat the Alco’s with smoking and the GE wide cabs are well known for that and the flames coming out of the stack. Most of the locos around here have been around here for some time and still keep running every day. They will have occasional issues especially when most are at or nearing 50 years old.

Just saw CA51 heading back to Camden in Somerdale with 4403/3026 and 7 cars. They have 6 empty centerbeams and one boxcar.
