Who Is The Industry Leader?

I know me view on things is bias because I am an employed by them, but who is watching who? UP has its own tech company to come up with newer and better things. Any other railroad do this? And how about EMD and GE, does the UP have there ear, "This is what the UP wants so this is what we have to offer the rest of you?" Is that the way things work? Something to kick around i guess.
