Hello,

This is a truck on a coal hopper on the short line Winnifrede Railroad.

Does anyone know what type of truck this is? Winnifrede is the only place where I've seen them on rolling stock. Thanks

I do believe those are older C&O coal cars. And if you look at the trucks on a tender of an older C&O Steam engine they had the same kinda trucks.

Back in the '50s or '60s the B&LE had some 90 ton hoppers which were considered pretty heavy-duty, the 70 ton cars were "big" and 50 and 55 tonners were still common. Anyway, those Bessemer hoppers had dual clasp brakes - a shoe outside as well as the normal inside location.

At some point later on, the second (outside) rigging was removed and the side frames were cut back, leaving the configuration you see there. Personally I have not seen such a deal on C&O cars but it's quite possible they had some.

Back then, side frames were cast with the purchasing railroad's initials in the side frames - if you can find a similar car and take a close look, you may find a "BLE" or C&O" cast there but no guarantee.
