Hello,

Last night in Canaan, NY, at around 4AM, I heard a procession of eastbounds. Many were GEVOs, but one had an extremely weird horn. For those of you that know about train horns or are musically smart, here's how it went.

#1L Bell working fine
#1 Bell sounding an OCTAVE LOWER than it should -- I HAVE NEVER HEARD A K HORN OR ANY HORN FOR THAT MATTER DOING THIS! IT SOUNDED LIKE A LESLIE A200!!!
#2 Bell not sounding
#3 and #4 Bells sounding.

Does anyone happen to know what unit this was? It was eastbound on the B&A at around 4AM.

Hi,

I'm no horn expert but I do know that there is one GEVO, the 5288, whose horn sounds almost like an ex-Conrail C40-8W (S3L?)from a distance, though up close it just sounds like a really messed up K5HL. Here's a video clip (not mine) of the 5288: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPJTX6yKhSw. I think that there's also some GEVOs with K5LAs, but this is the only really weird GEVO horn that I know of. Hope this helps.

Wow that's an interesting horn, but no cigar. The one I heard in Canaan sounded downright awful, but I actually liked the one on 5288, it doesn't sound messed up at all, and I think I've heard it before. I wonder if anyone has heard a K horn playing a note an octave below its normal tone.

Hahahahahahahahahahah who hasn't seen that video? lol

Not a GEVO, though. But yes, that is one example of how K series horns can be fouled, although they are pretty reliable good horns.
