From today's VRE Update Newsletter:
VRE, in parternship with MotivePower (the manufacturer of our new locmotives) has developed a computer application that continouosly draws diagnostic information from the locomotive that can be watched and accessed anywhere by our mechanical crews. Each new locomotive will have the computer software added to it.
When something goes wrong, the computer in the locomotive detects this and instructs the software to display a red icon. Mechanical techs will then be able to instantly direct our onboard crews with instructions on how to repair the locomotive more quickly.
This will save time, rather then dispatching a mechanic to come out and troubleshoot the problem will only serve to improve on time performance.
The new diagnostic system should begin implementation in late fall, 2010.
