A little jaunt down from Boston turned out good yesterday. After missing the 1st 3 trains we settled down at New Market and enjoyed the show.

1-11J 2 NS units rax west
2-18G 2 NS units and MBTA1138 Manifest east
3-? CSX Manifest east 2 units
4-212 2 NS units stacks east
5-22V 2 NS units and 1 UP unit stacks east
6-?CSX manifest east 2 units
7-Q707 2 CSX units (1 C40-8W in Conrail Blue) Trash West
8-64J 2 NS SD40-2’s elephant style with trash flats
9-Q190 2 CSX units pigs/bare tables east

A good day was had!

Any help with the 2 CSX eastbound symbols would be appreciated. I assume one of them was Q300. They both had trash cars.

Welcome to the area, and glad to hear you had a positive experience on the Lehigh Line! I was trackside for just a short time, but, if I may, offer just a small correction to your posts #4 & #5, as NS 22V (2-NS units) was first through at about 10:00am......

http://njtwom.rrpicturearchives.net/sho ... id=2082035

And NS 212 (2-NS, 1-UP) was immediately behind at 10:15am.....

I'm sorry that I missed 18G with the MBTA unit (along with all the other action)! The bike races in Bound Brook (and the numerous parties associated with) took precedence on this day........ :-)

This morning I had a great bike ride...

8:30 am saw a 141 car manifest come through hillsborough.
8:43am saw a 100+ car intermodal, mostly trailers
8:56am saw a 116 car empty auto train.

All were westbound NS trains .

Its getting hard to model these big trains in HO.

The 116 car NS autorack was 11J. Apparently they are taking some of the CSX traffic until the clearance project(wherever that is?) is finished.

The clearance work involves the Conrail National Docks Branch, specifically the Bergen Hill Tunnel (ex Erie) which opened in early 1861 (Before Lincoln was inaugurated President!). The tunnel at Waldo under the PATH is also being worked on. The project began in January and was expected to be completed in June. I haven't heard if they are on schedule or not. The line was already cleared for autoracks and lower clearance stacks; it is now getting the extra space to accomodate "Automax" racks and stacked high-cube containers.

The National Docks route through the Erie tunnel is primarily used by CSX trains between Selkirk and the North Jersey terminals at Oak Island and Ports Newark & Elizabeth. Some local and transfer moves also normally use the line through the tunnel. Affected inbound CSX trains are detouring via the P&H line from Hack to Stock and then using either the Lehigh Line or Lane Running Track (Waverly) for headroom and being pulled into Oak Island by yard crews. Since the P&H line is already pretty busy with the NS traffic to Croxton and the CSX traffic to South Kearny as well as the "through" CSX trains (like Q409/410, 417/418, etc), operating the empty racks via NS takes one train "out of the mix" on the P&H.

Detoured trains include the Q433/Q434 Oak Island/Selkirk manifests, Q268 autorack (with Q271 having been abolished - although someone recently reported seeing a 271), Ethanol trains (K646, etc), and whatever the symbols on the CSX Port container traffic are these days (used to be Q112/Q159 and Q162/Q163 but read recently that there had been changes).

What happened on the line tonight around MP 19 (Clark/Cranford) as I was leaving work around 11:30 and there was a Clark firecrew @ the Rahway ave. crossing and then they sped off to the Central ave. bridge area. Looked east down the tracks by the bridge and saw searchlights down the tracks alongside the Hyatt Hills golf course. And It looked like there was an eastbounder stopped on track 1.
Was there a derail, spill or a trespasser got creamed?
Just Curious as that's more or less my backyard!!!

I was in South Plainfield this morning and its been quite some time since I had last been there. I wasn't planning on staying too long, but as the morning got late, the train activity picked up. I got to South Plainfield just before nine and saw the cars of NS 21M. Here's what else I saw (pretty sure on the train types):

1. 9:30 CSX Q438 5116 & 554
2. 9:43 NS 24Z 8354 & 9681
3. 10:50 NS 20G 8361, 9508 & 9536
4. 10:50 CSX Q703 5247 and a second engine I couldn't see
5. 11:00 CSX Q300 7359 & 8103
6. 11:45 CSX Q410 5208, CN 2591, 645 & 94
7. 11:51 NS 213 9706, 8427 & 9852
8. 12:18 NS 22V 8376 & 7520

I left shortly before one o'clock. I didn't see the 212 or 18G, but overall, it was a good morning.

[quote="OCtrainguy"]
2. 9:43 NS 24Z 8354 & 9681
3. 10:50 NS 20G 8361, 9508 & 9536

One of those trains was 20E and the other was 20K. 24Z ran earlier in the morning and there was no 20G

Thanks for the clarification. It did sound like 20G to us, but I digress. I do appreciate the information.

Somewhat OT but...

It's gone now, but a few days ago (68Q?) had some nice power sitting in Sewaren, SOO SD60 6039. Luckily snapped a few photos of it before it departed.
