HARDWICK — An engine from Massachusetts Central Railroad derailed at a crossing near Benjamin Roach Field in the Wheelwright section of town Thursday morning.

The locomotive was pulling eight cars from Palmer to South Barre when it struck ice on the tracks at a crossing near the field and derailed, said Stephen Fontaine, business development director. The incident happened about 10:30 a.m. and no one was injured. ...

The rain the other day created tons of new ice dams in poor drainage spots. It was inevitable that somebody was going to derail on first run after yesterday's re-freeze at a spot where road runoff was likely to pool.
