Speaking of news coverage, did anyone see NBC news tonight? Excellent expose' of the lack of security in Regional Rail yards. The media and a SEPTA employee, whose identity was obscured for obvious reasons, toured standing equipment at Doylestown, Warminster, and Roberts Avenue without incident. No questions, no encounter with police or other employees, nada. It was good to see the media finally addressing a pertinent issue.

Is that surprising, given the time of night, the locales chosen, and the physical characteristics of the places visited? How about Media Yard, or West Trenton....why didn't they go there too? Or even the NJ Transit Morrisville Yard? Given the fact that Doylestown and Warminster aren't really yards, but merely storage tracks....as is Norristown Elm Street.....should we ask that a cop be stationed there all night long every night for protection when the car inspectors or car cleaners are not around?

And try going to Roberts yard at high noon.....

I have a similar rant elsewhere in the forum......

I don't think the news specified what time of night it was. Perhaps they visited Warminster and Doylestown because the so-called whistleblower lives in the vicinity of those locations. As far as Roberts Ave at high noon, you would have to wake the crews and the car knockers up from their catnaps. I do agree that a police officer at those locations would be a bit over-the-top, but a security camera is a definite plus. What if something was done by a terrorist to some of that equipment? People would be asking WHY in hindsight of a tragedy. At least have signs posted informing the public that trespassers will be prosecuted, like Amtrak has along their ROW. It doesn't really matter whether Doylestown and Warminster, or SEPTA's other outlying points are yards or storage tracks. That's just a matter of semantics. What's important is the CLEAR OPPORTUNITY for some individual to exploit SEPTA's lax post 9/11 stance.

Or any other rail facility in the area as well....not just SEPTA.

I just hate the thought of potential terrorists or even ordinary vandals getting ideas just from watching that report.

I also dare say that scoping out rail yards was not a necessary component of the animals involved in the Madrid or London bombings...just cart the goods on board in your backpack and detonate remotely (or right there if it's a suicide bomber).

We can have all the preventive security or measures in the world. That won't stop someone determined to cause destruction. And if something, God forbid, DOES happen, even with all that security and prevention in place, people will STILL ask why it happened and where was the lapse in security?
