Stopped train blocks Route 236 commuter traffic
SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — For early-morning commuters, for a time, a parked freight train blocked their passage across Route 236.
Sometime before 4:50 a.m. a Pan Am Railways engine came to a halt near the bridge at the South Berwick/Rollinsford line. Workers could be seen searching the tracks with flashlights before the sun rose.
The Berwick Police Department reported the train had not broken down, but had come to a halt after hitting an abandoned motorcycle on the Berwick portion of the tracks. The motorcycle had been stolen from South Berwick and then placed on the tracks in Berwick.
The tracks were cleared and additional information regarding the theft is being sought from the South Berwick Police Department, however, an official was not immediately available to provide comment this morning.
