Articles in the New York Review of Books sometimes move to archives behind a pay wall, so this link might be useful for a only a week or so. The magazine will print a second part of the article in the next issue. Mr. Judt has often written of his appreciation of railways. He grew up in or near London, but he taught also in the States.
