The Amsterdam Industrial Development Agency is beginning initial steps to gauge interest among businesses to rehabilitate the Edson Street Industrial Park railroad spur, which has fallen into disrepair.

The AIDA board members told Executive Director Jody Zakrevsky to reach out to business located along the spur about the potential redevelopment. The railroad spur has been inactive for around a decade, according to Zakrevsky.

The actual railroad infrastructure is owned by CSX Corporation, who has an operating agreement for the Edson Street spur, but the Amsterdam Chuctanunda and Northern Railroad Company owns the land and right of way. The AIDA Board of Directors are the members of the railroad company board, with the agency owning all of the railroad company’s shares.

“We do own the right of way, but CSX still owns that rail,” AIDA Economic Development Assistant Cheryl Sweet said. “They can still put their cars on there if they want to, but we own that right of way. We own the right of way not only where the rail ends, but also where the rail used to be.”

The new honcho at CSX, EHH, is unlikely to have any interest in reactivating the line.

Curious, I googled "Amsterdam, Chuctanunda & Northern Railroad Company" and got...
The Amsterdam, Chuctanunda & Northern was incorporated September 23, 1879, under the general laws of the State of New York, for the purpose of constructing and operating a railroad from a point on the line of The New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Company (first corporation) in Amsterdam, N. Y., to the oil mills of Kellogg & Miller, owners of the Amsterdam Linseed Oil Works, a distance of about 1.5 miles. The date of organization of the Amsterdam, Chuctanunda & Northern has not been ascertainable from the records reviewed.

Easily explored by those visiting the train show this weekend. You can still tell pretty well where it went in spots where the track has been taken up.
