I just finished reading a book about the various railroads throughout the country. The book was written in 1957. I learned a lot about railroading from this book. It explained how the central computer which the writer called the "central brain" was used to take a lot of info and decide how to apply the retarders and routing during classification. The book even explained the process of how rr ties are made. Based on 1955 data of course.
Anyways, the second last chapter was about the Santa Fe and the last few pages showed an overview of taxes paid to the community and a comparison of what the airlines, trucks and barge and towing companies paid. Quite a difference. The disparity can be applied to any rr most likely even today.
Railroads paid: Schools $18,243,000 + Gov't $13,760,000 = $32,000,000
Truck lines paid: Schools $416,000+ Gov't $313,900 = $730,000
Airlines paid: Schools $37,000 + Gov't $27,950 = $65,000
Barge/Towing: Schools $6,840 + Gov't $5,160 = $12,000
This data is from the Santa Fe RR from 1955. No wonder CSX took NY to court.
